Introduction
The Wi-Fi 8 wireless network standard, currently in draft stage, will not push transmission speeds further but will enhance connection stability, latency control, and QoS management to ensure a more stable network experience for various AI services in the future.
Version 1.0 Draft Unveiled
At the “Wi-Fi 8: A New Era of Connectivity in the AI Age” briefing hosted by Intel, Carlos Cordeiro, Intel Fellow and Chief Technology Officer of the Client Computing Group’s Wireless Communications, briefly outlined the key points of Wi-Fi 8.
Looking back at the earlier IEEE 802.11b, which had only 11 Mbps, it was instrumental in popularizing wireless networks.
It has evolved to Wi-Fi 7, codenamed IEEE 802.11be, with a transmission bandwidth reaching 5.8 Gbps, an increase of over 500 times.
Now, Wi-Fi 8, codenamed IEEE 802.11bn, is still under development and is set to release its 1.0 draft on August 1, 2025.

Detailed Introduction
Wi-Fi 8 can prioritize different types of data and coexist more smoothly with other wireless technologies like Bluetooth. Applications such as gaming and online meetings will experience a more stable connection.
Additionally, Wi-Fi 8 will provide more predictable latency, along with technologies like multi-access point coordination, offering smarter and more reliable wireless connections that will be widely adopted in various AI applications and devices.
â–² The bandwidth of Wi-Fi has progressed from the original IEEE 802.11b’s 11 Mbps to Wi-Fi 7’s 5.8 Gbps, an increase of over 500 times.
â–² Wi-Fi 7’s physical layer (PHY) has undergone significant upgrades, increasing bandwidth to 320 MHz and supporting modulation schemes up to 4096 QAM.
â–² As cloud and AI computing become more prevalent, the exchange of data between local and cloud environments is more frequent, leading to a higher demand for high bandwidth and low latency networks.
â–² Different scenarios require different network needs; for example, campuses need smooth and secure roaming; offices require comprehensive management features while considering long-distance transmission efficiency and device power consumption; home use is complex and requires smarter traffic management; and the education sector leans towards AI-driven perception actions and distance detection applications.
â–² Wi-Fi 8 builds on Wi-Fi 7 and IEEE 802.11bn, adding new features such as AI integration, enhanced reliability, security upgrades, and transmission optimization.
No longer chasing speed, but focusing on quality and security
Carlos Cordeiro emphasized that the goal of Wi-Fi 8 is no longer just to pursue peak speeds, but to prioritize stability and reliable transmission quality.
It will introduce smarter situational awareness technologies that maintain stable, low-latency, and high-throughput connections in crowded and mobile environments such as homes, offices, and airports.
â–² Wi-Fi 8 not only enhances transmission quality and reduces latency but also expands signal coverage, improves security protection, and even considers device power consumption.
â–² Wi-Fi 8 will enhance QoS through AI and utilize perception capabilities to understand current usage conditions, automatically optimizing connections.
â–² Reliability features include predictable low latency, multi-access point coordination, and enhanced roaming, all contributing to a more robust wireless connection.
â–² Security will be strengthened with enhanced encryption mechanisms while considering latency and performance during roaming across access points.
â–² Wi-Fi 8 is not only faster but also more stable, smarter, and safer, capable of meeting more new demands in the future.
Carlos Cordeiro also mentioned that Wi-Fi 8 is still under development and will be based on Wi-Fi 7 and IEEE 802.11bn, bringing more reliable and secure wireless networks, with related products expected to officially debut as early as 2027.
