On May 31, reported by Wang Ziyu, taking medicine is one of the necessary experiences in life, but for many children and even some adults, taking medicine can be a very difficult task. Additionally, some individuals cannot effectively absorb the medication due to physical reasons.

To address this, a recent report in the journal “Science Advances” details that scientists have designed and manufactured a microrobot resembling a centipede, capable of crawling within the intestines to deliver therapeutic drugs.

According to reports, this robot is only a few millimeters in size, made of flexible metal, and is guided by magnetic fluid. It does not cause any harm to human organs; once inside the body, it can adhere to the mucus covering internal organs and crawl in any direction.

Researchers state that the key to the successful manufacturing of this robot lies in its feet. They chose to use spiked pads made of chitosan to maintain grip, similar to the plant burrs that stick to pants when walking through fields. Once it grips onto a surface, it can maintain its hold even when washed over by liquids.

Currently, the robot has undergone related experiments in the lungs and digestive tract of pigs. Researchers guided the microrobot to the lower esophagus, then through the bronchi, all the way to the digestive tract. Tests indicate that it can carry loads up to three times its size and 20 times its weight.

Researchers believe that this robot will be used in the future to deliver drugs to various parts of the body.
