“Stove,” with the character for fire旁 and土, originally refers to a device for cooking. Due to China’s culinary tradition of cooking and eating immediately, the stove holds a particularly high status in the country. With the development of the times, modern stoves no longer necessarily use firewood, but as stoves have advanced, the quality requirements have also become higher. The latest national quality supervision inspection of stoves indicates that a significant portion of stoves are substandard.
Nearly 20% of Gas Stove Products Are Substandard
Recently, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine announced the results of the 2017 national quality supervision inspection of household gas stoves. A total of 90 batches of products from six provinces, including Shanxi, Shanghai, and Zhejiang, were inspected, and 17 batches were found to be non-compliant with standards, mainly involving thermal load, carbon monoxide concentration in flue gas, thermal efficiency, and temperature rise tests.
In the market, gas stoves are mainly structured as built-in and countertop types. The gas stoves inspected this time were mostly built-in products, which currently dominate the household gas stove market, accounting for a large market share.
“Thermal Load” Non-compliance Fails to Meet Normal Heating Needs
“Thermal load” is a performance indicator that simply refers to the size of the flame provided by the gas stove. When consumers purchase gas stoves, they choose appliances based on their heating needs, so the thermal load value is marked on the packaging or the stove itself, which is the rated thermal load.
The national standard “Household Gas Stoves” stipulates that the thermal load of ordinary gas stoves should not be less than 3500 watts. The inspection results showed that 8 batches of gas stove products had non-compliant thermal loads. They are:
Household gas stove produced by “Zhongshan Huangchao Electric Co., Ltd.” (Model JZT-2(12T));
Household gas stove produced by “Zhongshan Kangtai Kitchen Electric Co., Ltd.” (Model JZY-YI1);
Household gas stove produced by “Zhongshan Xianpai Life Electric Co., Ltd.” (Model JZT-XPQ2);
Household built-in double-burner gas stove produced by “Zhongshan Huipusi Electric Co., Ltd.” (Model JZT-3810);
Household gas stove produced by “Zhongshan Aiqi Electric Co., Ltd.” (Model JZY-A);
Household gas stove produced by “Foshan Baiwo Kitchen and Bath Electric Co., Ltd.” (Model JZY-BWB37);
Household gas stove produced by “Foshan Shunde Rihong Electric Co., Ltd.” (Model JZT-502Z);
Household infrared gas stove produced by “Shanxi Longye Technology Co., Ltd.” (Model JZT-A208).
These products with non-compliant thermal loads cannot meet consumers’ heating needs, affecting normal usage.
“Carbon Monoxide Concentration in Flue Gas” Exceeds Standard, Affecting Human Health
Tests showed that some gas stove products had “carbon monoxide concentration in flue gas” exceeding the standard, directly affecting consumer health.
Among the 90 batches of products inspected, 4 batches of gas stove products had non-compliant “carbon monoxide concentration in flue gas,” which are:
Household gas stove produced by “Zhongshan Huangchao Electric Co., Ltd.” (Model JZT-2(12T));
Household gas stove produced by “Zhongshan Xianpai Life Electric Co., Ltd.” (Model JZT-XPQ2);
Household built-in gas stove produced by “Zhongshan Boyi Electric Technology Co., Ltd.” (Model JZT-A);
Household gas stove produced by “Foshan Shunde Rihong Electric Co., Ltd.” (Model JZT-502Z).
Excessive Temperature Rise Can Lead to Component Failure or Scalding Accidents
Gas stoves also have a safety performance testing item that not only affects product lifespan but also impacts consumer usage and endangers consumer safety. This is “temperature rise.” Temperature rise refers to: “the temperature difference between the surface temperature of product components and the ambient temperature.” Generally, it refers to the temperature rise of the knobs.
The household gas stove produced by “Zhongshan Huangchao Electric Co., Ltd.” (Model JZT-2(12T)) reached a temperature of over 80 degrees during the temperature rise test, resulting in a temperature rise value of approximately 60K (where K is the unit of temperature rise) after subtracting the ambient temperature of 21 degrees Celsius. The national standard requires that the temperature rise of metal knobs should be ≤35K.
Inspectors stated that consumers must touch the knobs to turn the gas stove on or adjust the flame size, and if the temperature rise is too high, it may lead to component failure or scalding accidents.
Energy-Efficient Products That Are Not Energy Efficient Mislead Consumers
This national quality supervision inspection of gas stove products also found that some gas stoves that are clearly gas-consuming are falsely labeled as energy-efficient products.
Regarding the energy efficiency labeling of gas stoves, China has a mandatory national standard “Energy Efficiency Limits and Energy Efficiency Levels for Household Gas Stoves,” which stipulates three energy efficiency levels. Gas stove products must reach at least the third level in the energy efficiency table; reaching the second level indicates a certain energy-saving effect, while the first level indicates the best energy-saving effect. During thermal efficiency testing, inspectors found that some companies were suspected of falsely labeling and misleading consumers.
Inspectors introduced that household gas stove products are included in the national energy efficiency directory, and all products must undergo energy efficiency registration and display energy efficiency labels. In this inspection, 5 batches of products suspected of falsely labeling energy efficiency were found, which are:
Household built-in double-burner gas stove produced by “Zhongshan Huipusi Electric Co., Ltd.” (Model JZT-3810);
Household gas stove produced by “Zhongshan Huaneng Gas Stove Co., Ltd.” (Model JZY-A27);
Household gas stove produced by “Foshan Nanhai Shengli Kitchen Equipment Factory” (Model JZY-2000);
Household gas stove produced by “Foshan Baiwo Kitchen and Bath Electric Co., Ltd.” (Model JZY-BWB37);
Household gas stove produced by “Foshan Shunde Hailida Life Electric Co., Ltd.” (Model JZY-968).
These products labeled as energy efficiency level one or two, but actually do not meet the requirements for level two energy efficiency, are misleading products.
Substandard Gas Stoves Mostly Come from Small Assembly Enterprises with Relatively Poor Quality
To further understand the quality status of household gas stoves, reporters logged onto the official website of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and found that the agency has conducted inspections of household gas stove products for several consecutive years, with results similar to this national inspection, with a pass rate of over eighty percent.
According to statistics and analysis from the National Gas Appliance Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, it has been found that non-compliant enterprises have consistently come from the main production areas of Guangdong and Zhejiang, and they are all small enterprises. Regarding the current situation of many small enterprises producing gas appliances with varying product quality, Hu Yu, the head of the National Gas Appliance Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, stated that one reason for this situation is that most gas stove manufacturing enterprises are assembly-type.
Hu Yu stated that for the non-compliant products found in this inspection, they are currently being processed according to national regulations.
