In home living, you must have encountered such a “pain point”—traditional air conditioner remote controls are cumbersome to operate, and each air conditioner corresponds to a different remote control, making it easy to confuse and difficult to pair. This dilemma is even more pronounced for older users. Therefore, adding smart voice interaction and control features to home appliances to enhance user experience is an increasingly strong demand.
To achieve smart voice control functionality, developers face multiple technical challenges: on one hand, seamless interconnection with home appliances is required, and on the other hand, offline voice recognition (especially complex voice processing) poses challenges to the computing power of edge devices, while also needing to balance the conflicting design requirements of low power consumption and high precision.
Voice Control Solution for Air Conditioners Based on RW612
To help smart home developers tackle these challenges and accelerate product design, NXP has launched a Chinese voice control solution based on a tri-band wireless MCU. This solution centers around NXP’s next-generation RW612 tri-band wireless MCU development kit (RW612 EVK), with an external microphone and display, successfully building an indoor voice control prototype system.
It is worth mentioning that the RW612 integrates a 260MHz Arm Cortex-M33 processor core, which is sufficient to handle various complex functions and commands commonly found in households, thus enabling precise recognition of Chinese commands.
In the following demonstration of the air conditioner voice control solution in Chinese, users can control the air conditioner’s power switch, temperature adjustment, and other functions in real-time through natural speech, making the interaction smooth and fluid, marking a new paradigm in human-computer interaction for smart homes.
RW612: Highly Integrated Low-Power Tri-Band Wireless MCU
The RW612 wireless MCU is the core of the aforementioned smart voice control solution. It is a highly integrated low-power tri-band wireless MCU that combines an MCU with Wi-Fi 6 + BLE 5.4 / 802.15.4 RF units, suitable for a wide range of applications including interconnected smart home devices, enterprise and industrial automation, smart accessories, and smart energy.
The MCU subsystem of the RW612 is equipped with a 260MHz Arm Cortex-M33 core, featuring TrustZone-M, 1.2MB of on-chip SRAM, and a high-bandwidth 4-channel SPI interface, which includes an instant decryption engine that supports secure access to external XIP flash memory.
In terms of wireless functionality, the RW612 includes a fully functional 1×1 dual-band (2.4GHz / 5GHz) 20MHz Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) subsystem, which offers higher throughput, greater network efficiency, lower latency, and wider coverage compared to the previous generation of Wi-Fi standards. The low-power Bluetooth RF unit supports a high data rate of 2Mbit/s, long-range, and extended broadcasting. The on-chip 802.15.4 RF unit supports the latest Thread mesh networking protocol. Additionally, the RW612 can support Matter over Wi-Fi or Matter over Thread, providing excellent connectivity and interoperability.
The RW612 also integrates EdgeLock security technology, featuring secure boot, secure debugging, secure firmware updates, and secure lifecycle management, along with hardware encryption and Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) for secure key management.
In summary, the RW612 employs advanced design to achieve high integration, low power consumption, and high security in a wireless MCU that requires only a 3.3V power supply, providing high space utilization and cost-effectiveness.
