Unlocking the Secrets of TCL’s Dual Cell LCD Display Technology

Unlocking the Secrets of TCL's Dual Cell LCD Display Technology

At the recent TCL large-screen era appreciation meeting, Vice President Zhang Shaoyong stated that TCL will not sacrifice picture quality to reduce costs in the era of large screens. It is well known that as the screen size increases, the details of the image become less refined. So how does TCL solve this problem?

In today’s continuously evolving LCD displays, the display technologies compatible with LCD are also constantly developing.Among them, Local Dimming technology is a major trend in display technology innovation, which is mainly used to control the brightness of the backlight, effectively enhancing the performance of light and dark details in the image.Although Local Dimming technology can control the brightness of the backlight, the number of controllable zones can only achieve hundreds or even thousands of zones, while achieving tens of thousands or more controlled zones is still quite challenging.

This is mainly because conventional LCDs often use the number of Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) as the basis for zoning, and using this method for zoning results in relatively few pixels included in each zone.It is evident that there are still technical issues regarding the fineness of brightness control.

To address this, TCL applied for a patent titled “Dual Cell Liquid Crystal Display Module and Television” (Application No: 201910241258.3), with Shenzhen TCL New Technology Co., Ltd. as the applicant.

Unlocking the Secrets of TCL's Dual Cell LCD Display Technology

Figure 1

Figure 1 illustrates a dual cell liquid crystal display module proposed in this patent, which mainly consists of a first liquid crystal panel 100, a second liquid crystal panel 200, and a backlight module 300.The backlight module 300 is located at the bottom layer of the dual cell liquid crystal display module and can emit light, primarily providing the backlight source. The second liquid crystal panel 200 is above the backlight module 300 and can control the light emitted from the backlight module 300 to pass through the second liquid crystal panel 200 and transmit to the first liquid crystal panel 100, while also controlling the brightness changes of the light during this process. The first liquid crystal panel 100 is above the second liquid crystal panel 200, mainly used for image display. In addition, the sizes of the two panels are identical, and the second liquid crystal panel 200 is attached to the second liquid crystal panel 200, tightly fitting together to achieve complete pixel overlap.

Since each pixel of the second liquid crystal panel 200 completely overlaps with each pixel of the first liquid crystal panel 100, this feature allows us to control the transmission intensity of light through each corresponding pixel in the first liquid crystal panel 100, thus affecting the brightness changes of the corresponding pixel during image display.

Let’s take a small example to compare the traditional liquid crystal display with the display in this patent. In a conventional liquid crystal display that uses only one liquid crystal panel and is based on LED lights for backlight control, generally one LED corresponds to one zone, and each zone corresponds to only a few hundred pixels. However, in the display mentioned in the patent, each pixel of the second liquid crystal panel 200 is considered a backlight control unit. Taking the commonly used resolution of 1920*1080 as an example, the dual cell liquid crystal display module described in this patent will ultimately achieve precise regional backlight control at the level of millions of pixels, indicating that the precision of millions of zones far exceeds the brightness control of hundreds or even thousands of zones in local dimming technology, which will greatly enhance the visual experience of the image.

TCL not only pursues innovation in technology but also strives for excellence in user experience. Currently, TCL is rapidly developing in the large-screen market, especially with a year-on-year growth of 114.6% in sales of ultra-large screen TVs. We hope more domestic enterprises can achieve further glory in the international market.
