On March 12, Texas Instruments (TI) unveiled the world’s smallest microcontroller (MCU), the MSPM0C1104, at the Embedded World exhibition in Germany. It measures just 1.38mm², which is 38% smaller than the current smallest MCU on the market, with a unit price of approximately $0.16.
The MSPM0C1104 is based on the Arm Cortex-M0+ core and features 16KB of memory, a 12-bit SAR ADC with three channels, and six general-purpose input/output pins. It also provides standard communication interfaces such as Universal Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter (UART), Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI), and Inter-Integrated Circuit (I²C), making it suitable for applications in medical wearables and personal electronics.
Texas Instruments stated that the MSPM0C1104’s size of just 1.38mm² is 38% smaller than the current smallest MCU available.
“In miniature systems such as earbuds and medical probes, PCB space is a scarce and valuable resource,” said Vinay Agarwal, Vice President and General Manager of TI’s MSP Microcontroller division. “With the addition of the world’s smallest MCU, our MSPM0 MCU portfolio offers limitless possibilities for providing smarter and more connected experiences in our daily lives.”
This MCU is part of the MSPM0 MCU series, which includes 100-pin compatible devices with scalable configurations of on-chip analog peripherals and a range of computing options for sensing and control applications. The series is manufactured in-house by Texas Instruments.
Texas Instruments also provides an optimized software development kit for all MSPM0 MCUs; hardware development kits for rapid prototyping; reference designs; and code examples for general MCU functionality. TI’s Zero Code Studio tool allows users to configure, develop, and run microcontroller applications in minutes without coding.
The starting price for the MSPM0C1104 microcontroller is $0.16 per unit for orders of 1,000 units, and the product line includes other small packages to help reduce PCB size and bill of materials.
