Taiwan Media: Trends in Semiconductor Development in Mainland China

According to Taiwanese media reports, semiconductors are the main battlefield of technological competition, serving as a foundation and core industry of modern communication, and are an important indicator of a country’s technological development level and overall national strength.

On July 18, Taiwan’s Wang Bao reported that it is expected that mainland China will continue to accelerate its semiconductor development through supportive policies, the accumulation of internal and external human resources, and the deeper integration of capital markets and technological innovation via the Sci-Tech Innovation Board. The aim is to push mainland China’s semiconductors into a stage of structural reform characterized by enhanced technical capabilities, increased innovation vitality, and product diversification based on new products and new division of labor driven by emerging technologies in the future.

The report suggests that the semiconductor industry’s performance in mainland China this year is generally expected to show a pattern of first decline and then rise. The easing of the U.S. ban on Huawei has led to an increase in Huawei’s orders from the supply chain in the second half of the year. Additionally, the restructuring of Huawei’s ecosystem is beneficial for the development of local semiconductor manufacturers in mainland China, accelerating the rise of domestic supply chains in core areas.

The report states that if we look at the development axis of mainland China’s wafer foundry in 2019, it still focuses on catching up and breakthroughs, as well as differentiated competition. In 2019, SMIC focused on advancing FinFET technology, and the Shanghai SMIC Southern FinFET factory was successfully completed and entered the capacity construction phase. The company also planned to achieve mass production of 14nm FinFET in the second half of 2019, while the 12nm process development entered the customer introduction phase.
