At the end of 2022, Sony Semiconductor announced a new mobile image sensor brand called LYTIA, derived from Lyra (the Lyra constellation) and Light, with the Chinese name “光喻” meaning “cognition of light” and “narration of light.” The aim is to convey the concept of an image sensor that strives to authentically express the scene before the eyes.Half a year later, Sony finally launched new products under this brand, introducing five models: LYT900, LYT800, LYT700, LYT600, and LYT500, all featuring 50 million pixels but differing in size and technology levels.LYT900 is the flagship product, measuring 1/0.98 inches, with an effective pixel count of approximately 50 million, designed for high-quality smartphone photography, and is a 1-inch image sensor capable of achieving high gray values with low power consumption.LYT800 is a high-end model, measuring 1/1.43 inches, with an effective pixel count of about 53 million, claiming to deliver high-quality output close to that of a 1-inch sensor. It is the first Sony product to use a dual-layer transistor pixel structure, enabling high saturation signal levels.LYT700 is a 1/1.56-inch product that does not compromise the slim design of smartphones and supports high-end features such as HDR.LYT6000 is a 1/1.953-inch product, categorized as a mainstream model, supporting full-pixel autofocus and other features.LYT500 is a 1/2.93-inch 50-megapixel sensor suitable for front-facing selfie cameras, supporting features like allways-on functionality.Sony officially stated that the reason for launching multiple 50-megapixel sensors under the LYTIA brand is that this resolution level is becoming increasingly common in smartphones. From the specifications and sizes, it is clear that LYT900 and LYT800 are positioned as flagship models, while LYT700 serves as a sub-flagship product, with the others being more suitable for secondary cameras. It remains to be seen which smartphone company will be the first to adopt these sensors and how this new brand will perform.
