Breathing is the first signal of life, but respiratory diseases are often overlooked. In today’s fast-paced life, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and other respiratory diseases have become significant health risks.
In the diagnosis of respiratory diseases, monitoring lung function is particularly critical. It is not only a strong basis for early diagnosis of diseases but also an important means of assessing treatment effects and tracking recovery progress. However, traditional spirometer devices often have issues such as complex operation, inconvenient data recording, and inability to transmit data in real-time, making it difficult to meet the needs of modern healthcare and patient self-management.
Against this backdrop, Renesas has launched a wireless spirometer solution that can accurately track key indicators of lung health, including forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1), peak flow (L/min), total lung capacity, and detailed inhalation/exhalation patterns recorded over time.

Main Control
The main control of the wireless spirometer solution uses the Renesas RA4L1 low-power MCU, which is based on the Arm TrustZone®Cortex®-M33 (CM33) core, achieving an ideal balance of low operating voltage, low power consumption, and high performance. In operational status, the RA4L1’s voltage can be as low as 1.6V, with a standby current as low as 1.65µA, and it features various low-power functions, allowing users to dynamically optimize power consumption/performance according to application requirements. It also integrates a segment LCD controller and capacitive touch button control unit, effectively realizing HMI functionality.
Wireless Charging
For wireless charging, the solution employs the PTX30W single-chip NFC receiver, which features bidirectional data transmission capabilities and a high level of integration. Within a single chip, the PTX30W integrates multiple functions such as energy harvesting, wireless power negotiation, and lithium-ion battery charging, significantly reducing the number of external components. Additionally, due to its excellent RF performance, the PTX30W is very suitable for integration into small devices. Furthermore, during design, users can utilize a universal NFC wireless charger solution equipped with Renesas’ advanced NFC transmitter to achieve efficient energy transfer and a convenient charging experience.
Power Supply
In terms of power supply, the solution features the ISL9122A synchronous buck-boost regulator, which has an automatic bypass function for situations where the input voltage is close to the output voltage. It can automatically switch between buck and boost modes without causing significant disturbance to the output. In addition to the automatic bypass function, if voltage regulation is not required, users can select a forced bypass power-saving mode via the I2C interface for even lower power consumption.
Bluetooth and WiFi
To facilitate user data monitoring, this solution also incorporates the DA16600MOD module to support Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity. This module integrates the WiFi DA16200 system-on-chip (SoC) and low-power Bluetooth LE DA14531 SoC into a single module, with very low power consumption, making it ideal for battery-powered IoT devices.
Additionally, users can also choose to utilize the DA14535 SoC for Bluetooth functionality design, which integrates a 2.4GHz transceiver and an Arm Cortex®-M0+ microcontroller, equipped with 64kB RAM and 12kB one-time programmable (OTP) memory. Thanks to its highly integrated design, the DA14535 SoC requires only six tiny external passive components, one crystal, and power to build a complete Bluetooth Low Energy system.
With Bluetooth and WiFi capabilities, this solution enables secure data transmission, storage, and remote assessment, ensuring that both users and healthcare institutions can easily access data.
The Renesas wireless spirometer solution provides an efficient, convenient, and reliable lung health management tool for patients with respiratory diseases and healthcare professionals. It not only helps patients better manage their lung health and improve their quality of life but also facilitates remote medical diagnosis, enhancing the utilization efficiency of medical resources.
In the future, Renesas will continue to leverage its rich portfolio of embedded processors, sensors, and analog IC products to provide more innovative, reliable, and safe solutions for medical and healthcare devices, helping people enjoy healthier lives!
