UCC Holding announced the official launch of the printing phase of the 3D printing school project in collaboration with the Public Works Authority (Ashghal), which is hailed as the largest 3D printing construction project in the world.
According to a press release from UCC Holding, the project will utilize 3D printing technology to construct two public schools. Each school will cover an area of 20,000 square meters, totaling 40,000 square meters for both schools, which is currently 40 times larger than the largest 3D printed building area in the world. These two schools are part of the second phase of Qatar’s school development program under a public-private partnership (PPP) model for 14 schools, with UCC Holding and Ashghal signing the agreement for the second phase in March 2024.
The two-story schools will be built on plots of 100×100 meters, using two BODXL printers provided by the Danish company COBOD. These printers measure 50 meters in length, 30 meters in width, and 15 meters in height, making them the largest of their kind globally, roughly equivalent to the size of a Boeing 737 hangar.
Over the past eight months, a 3D construction team composed of architects, civil engineers, materials scientists, and printer technicians has conducted over 100 full-scale test prints using the BOD2 printer at a test site in Doha. These tests primarily focused on optimizing concrete mix designs, testing performance under local climate conditions, and developing custom nozzles for smooth material extrusion. In May 2025, the team completed an intensive training program in collaboration with COBOD engineers, covering printer operation, structural layering strategies, printing sequences, and real-time quality control. The statement noted that the two schools are expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
