Overview of Major FPGA Manufacturers and Their Key Chips

1

Introduction

With the popularity of artificial intelligence, the demand for real-time processing of large volumes of images and video data has led to an increasing need for FPGA in hardware design. This article aims to summarize the current mainstream FPGA chips in the market and their main attributes.

2

Xilinx (赛灵思)

Official Website:Xilinx Official Website
Company Introduction:Xilinx is a global leader in programmable logic complete solutions and is currently the number one FPGA solution provider.
Development Tools:Vivado (pronounced as vivado), ISE (after the release of Vivado, Xilinx has no plans to upgrade ISE anymore)
Their products include the following parts:
1. Spartan Series: Positioned in the low-end market, the latest device is Spartan7, which uses 28nm technology. Spartan6 and earlier were all 45nm technology. This series of devices are affordable and have relatively small logic scales.
2. Artix Series: Xilinx launched the Artix series products as a transition between the low-end Spartan and high-end Kintex, especially with significant advantages in communication interfaces compared to Spartan. Therefore, if the design requires advanced high-speed interfaces rather than just logic resources, consider the Artix series.
3. Kintex and Virtex Series: These are Xilinx’s high-end products, including the 28nm Kintex7 and Virtex7 series, as well as the 16nm Kintex7 Ultrascale+ and Virtex7 Ultrascale+ series.
4. Fully Programmable SoC and MPSoC Series: Including Zynq-7000 and Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC series FPGAs, which can embed ARM Cortex series CPUs, gradually becoming popular in SOPC applications.

3

Altera (艾尔特拉)

Official Website:https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/programmable.html
Altera’s FPGA devices are roughly divided into three series: low-end Cyclone series; high-end Stratix series; and the Arria series, which is between the two and facilitates ASIC conversion.
1. MAXII Series: The MAXII series is CPLD. Altera was once famous for its CPLD. If you choose CPLD, you can confidently use Altera’s. As for the differences between CPLD and FPGA, I won’t elaborate here. There will be an introduction in a later article.
2. Cyclone Series: The latest is Cyclone10, positioned for consumer products, competing with Spartan. It has relatively fewer logic and interface resources, characterized by high cost-performance ratio.
3. Stratix Series: The latest is Stratix10, for high-end applications, competing with Xilinx’s Virtex series.
4. Arria Series: This is an SOC series FPGA, with built-in ARM Cortex A9 cores. The latest technology is 20nm.

4

Actel

Company Introduction:Actel focuses on the US military and aerospace sectors, primarily offering antifuse structure FPGAs and flash-based FPGAs, which have advantages in radiation resistance and high reliability. It was acquired by Microsemi in 2010.
Product Introduction:
1. Flash-based General FPGA Series: Includes PolarFire, IGLOO2, and IGLOO2 three high, medium, and low-end series.
2. Special Application Series: Such as SOC-based ProASIC3 and mixed-signal Fusion. Built-in with ARM, AD, etc.
3. Antifuse FPGA: Mainly used in aerospace, with radiation resistance features, non-rewriteable; once programmed incorrectly, the chip is wasted, so thorough simulation is essential.

5

Achronix

Company Introduction:Achronix is a high-tech company in the US providing high-performance, high-density FPGA solutions. It is committed to developing the next generation of FPGA devices using advanced 22nm 3D FinFET technology.
Product Introduction:
Its Speedster22i is the world’s fastest FPGA, equipped with rich interfaces such as 100G Ethernet, 100G Interlaken, PCI Express, and DDR3.
