New Version of Raspberry Pi OS Released: Supports Linux Kernel 6.1 LTS

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has released a new version of the official Raspberry Pi OS for Raspberry Pi computers, featuring updated components, bug fixes, and various performance improvements.

The most significant change in Raspberry Pi OS 2023-05-03 is the kernel upgrade from the long-term supported Linux 5.15 LTS to the long-term supported Linux 6.1 LTS, which will provide better performance for Raspberry Pi computers.

Existing Raspberry Pi OS users can execute the rpi-update command in the terminal emulator to upgrade to the Linux kernel 6.1 LTS. Linux 6.1 LTS is now the default kernel on the new Raspberry Pi OS images.

The new version of Raspberry Pi OS has updated various applications, most notably Chromium 113, which is the default browser for Raspberry Pi OS. It includes all the latest security updates and the new version brings WebGPU support, expected to enhance the performance of web applications and overall browsing experience.

The new Raspberry Pi OS version also includes Raspberry Pi Imager 1.7.4, RealVNC Viewer 7.0.1.48981, RealVNC Server 7.0.1.49073, Mathematica 13.2.1, and Matlab 23.1.0, and brings updated VLC hardware acceleration patches that provide better performance when playing video files.

The libcamera and libcamera-apps components have also been updated in the new Raspberry Pi OS version to improve IMX296 sensor tuning, enhance audio resampling and encoding processing using the libav library, improve Qt preview window rendering performance, enhance thumbnail rendering, add support for 16-bit Bayer in the DNG writer, add processing for generalized statistics, and resolve overflow issues that could lead to incorrect AGC algorithm calculations.
