Marvell has launched the world’s first PCI-E 5.0 SSD controller, the Bravera SC5, which is designed for cloud services and data centers. The massive data that cloud services need to process has driven the demand for high-performance computing. As the number of cores in servers continues to increase, data throughput is also rising, necessitating faster storage bandwidth. The Bravera SC5, utilizing PCI-E 5.0×4, can meet the performance demands of cloud servers.

The Bravera SC5 series is the industry’s first PCI-E 5.0×4 and NVMe 1.4b SSD controller. Compared to current PCI-E 4.0 SSD controllers, it offers double the performance, with sequential read speeds reaching 14GB/s and random read IOPS hitting a staggering 2 million. It is specifically optimized for cloud environments and is the first controller to support Elastic SLA Enforcer, significantly reducing CPU utilization and improving user experience.

The Bravera SC5 series controller comes in two models: MV-SS1331, which supports 8-channel flash, and MV-SS1333, which supports 16-channel flash, with the latter offering double the performance of the existing 8-channel model. The Bravera SC5 controller is also the industry’s first SSD controller that can implement SEF, ZNS, and Open Channel modes without changing hardware, providing excellent flexibility for seamless hardware reuse during migration tasks.

From the provided block diagram, the new controller combines ARM Cortex-R8 and Cortex-M7 architecture processors, supporting DDR4-3200 or LPDDR4x-4266 ECC DRAM cache. The controller’s package size is 20*20mm. With a sequential read speed of 14GB/s, sequential write speed of 9GB/s, 4K random read IOPS of 2 million, and 4K random write IOPS of 1 million, while the performance is impressive, the power consumption is also relatively high, at 9W and 9.8W respectively.

The Bravera SC5 supports Marvell’s fifth-generation NANDEdge LDPC error correction technology and is compatible with 3D NAND from various flash manufacturers, supporting everything from SLC to QLC. Marvell has already begun providing samples to customers.
