Introduction to RF and Wireless Technology

Books written by foreigners are usually lively and easy to understand, but unfortunately, most translations are quite stiff. Today, I recommend this introductory book on RF, authored by Carl and J. Weisman. Based on the author’s years of work experience, it uses a humorous and engaging language, with concise and clear sections, focusing on the main concepts and working principles of RF hardware and wireless systems, making it suitable for beginners in RF and wireless communication to read and learn.

The genuine link on JD is as follows:

“Introduction to RF and Wireless Technology (2nd Edition)” provides a comprehensive introduction to the basic concepts and main RF devices in wireless communication, and takes digital mobile phones as an example to detail the basic knowledge in wireless communication systems. It offers a relatively detailed introduction from the concepts to the working principles of basic RF hardware and wireless communication systems, systematically and specifically introducing the key technologies and systems that have emerged during the development of wireless communication, such as broadcasting, radar, point-to-point microwave, and mobile phone systems; it also briefly introduces key technologies in newer areas of wireless communication, such as broadband fixed wireless communication, wireless networks, and mobile Internet. Therefore, “Introduction to RF and Wireless Technology (2nd Edition)” is suitable for beginners in RF and wireless communication, and can also serve as a self-study reference book for professionals in the field of RF and wireless communication.

Introduction to RF and Wireless Technology

Author’s Note

Since I wrote the first edition of “Introduction to RF and Wireless Technology”, many changes have occurred in the RF (RF) and wireless fields. In fact, many technologies have been around for a long time but have only gained widespread application in the last two years. Undeniably, our lives will change with the wireless technology revolution we are experiencing. This book is written for those who want to understand the practical workings of this mysterious technology but have not had the luck to obtain an engineering degree. Throughout, the most important purpose of this book is to simplify RF electronics and wireless technology, hence it employs analogies, metaphors, and a minimal amount of mathematical writing techniques. To further explain the content, many graphics and figures are included. Unlike other communication technology books, this book’s language is clear, brisk, and humorous. In my opinion, no matter how correct or profound an introductory book about RF is, if it is lengthy and tedious, readers often lose interest before finishing the first chapter. “Introduction to RF and Wireless Technology” strives to explain concepts in a simple way. Under its guidance, this book aims to achieve two main goals: to provide an understanding of RF devices and wireless systems concepts, and to introduce the main terminology in the industry. Without prior learning of the terminology, it is difficult to grasp such complex content as wireless communication. “Introduction to RF and Wireless Technology” mainly targets those with little to no background in RF knowledge but who need or are eager to learn about it. Many engineers working in the RF field are non-technical personnel who benefit from understanding and communicating about RF. They include non-technical managers, sales executives, scheduling specialists, manufacturer representatives, sales personnel, marketing and communication personnel, advertising agents, retail stall personnel, recruiters, financial analysts, and technical experts. The first edition was very popular among investment bankers and venture capitalists. There are three ways to use this book. First, read through the book as each chapter builds on the previous one, starting with basic concepts and terminology and ending with various types of wireless systems. Second, if readers want to quickly grasp individual terms and concepts, they can read only parts of the content. Some terms are explained repeatedly across different chapters, making them easier to understand than descriptions in a single chapter. Third, this book can serve as a reference bibliography. Many tables, terms, and appendices can help readers quickly master the terminology, abbreviations, and specifications in the wireless industry. Regardless of how readers use this book, if they are encountering RF for the first time, it is recommended to read all of Part 1 (Chapters 1 and 2) as it lays the conceptual foundation for the rest of the book. Part 2 (Chapters 3-5) mainly targets personnel working in the RF and wireless industry, detailing the basic technologies of RF systems. It explains all the important functional modules used to manufacture RF hardware and the different methods of making them. It also discusses modulation, an engaging topic that serves as preparatory knowledge for entering the wireless world. In the second edition, new content added to Part 2 includes smart antennas and superconducting filters. Other new devices added in the second edition are phase shifters and phase detectors (and their roles in phase modulation). Additionally, an extended discussion and vivid description of phase modulation have been added accordingly. The second edition also introduces some of the newer semiconductor materials used today. Finally, Part 3 (including Chapters 6-8) is quite interesting. This part provides readers with an overview of several wireless systems. Chapter 6 discusses some wireless systems that have been around for a while. Most readers are likely familiar with these systems, but may not understand how they work; the new version of Chapter 6 includes an expanded discussion of GPS and an introduction to satellite Internet transmission. Chapter 7 has been revised in the second edition, specifically discussing mobile phones. It discusses different mobile phone systems selected globally and how they work, providing a general block diagram of digital cellular phones. Given its importance for future mobile phones, Chapter 7 also has a section dedicated to discussing the workings of CDMA. Chapter 7 also discusses the future of mobile phones. Chapter 8 is a new addition in the second edition, discussing all these wireless technologies, systems, and applications (which had already emerged by the time the first edition was published), including the developments of broadband fixed wireless, wireless interconnection, and mobile Internet access. It also discusses some cutting-edge wireless technologies, wireless security, and health issues. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the first edition, and I hope to receive more supplementary feedback, especially critical suggestions to improve the content of the second edition.
