“Can children go to the river to play and swim alone?”
“Is it okay to click on links sent by strangers?”
“Can a tricycle carry people?”
……

During the hot summer days, a group of special “participants” entered the conference room of the Mashan Village Committee in Mashan Town, Meitan County. Children from grades one to eight and their parents sat together, attentively listening to a “summer safety education class” taught by police officers.
“Absolutely not!” In response to the police officer’s questions, the children’s answers were firm.

It is understood that this is a summer teaching initiative organized by Mashan Town in collaboration with the Youth League Committee and Guizhou University of Technology, inviting 20 university students and professionals from various industries to teach local children, enriching their summer lives and experiences, and creating a safe and interesting learning environment.

Water safety, AI robots, crafts, hygiene tips, and the world of music… The two-week class was rich in content and engaging, with a strong sense of technology colliding with the local classroom.

This summer teaching initiative in Mashan Town adopted a “villager request, party branch assignment” working mechanism. Before the course began, student and parent needs were collected through various party branches, which were then matched with the Youth League Committee and Guizhou University of Technology to design targeted courses, forming a closed loop of “community needs list – party member claim list – effectiveness feedback list.”

“Yay! We finished first! This little desk lamp looks great and can be voice-controlled! Turn on the light~ Turn off the light~ Pink~ Blue…”
“Oh my! I actually created a rainbow using a prism and a flashlight!”
“It turns out buoyancy and pressure can be demonstrated with a small water bottle and a ping pong ball!”
……
In different classrooms, the sounds of children’s laughter filled the air.

Halfway through the class, two pieces of floral “sunshade curtains” were added to the back glass window of the conference room. “The number of students who signed up for this class far exceeded our expectations. We originally anticipated around 40 participants, but over 80 signed up. To meet everyone’s expectations, we rearranged the seating and used the largest conference room, which is also the only air-conditioned room in the village committee, for the children’s classes,” said Li Bing, the Party Secretary and Director of the Village Committee in Mashan Town. “However, students in the back still reported that it was very sunny, so we brought two sheets from home to cover the transparent glass, hoping to bring some summer coolness to the students.”

The two-week class quickly came to an end, and when the teachers stood on the podium to say goodbye to the students, the innocent faces of the children were filled with tears of reluctance.

“Teacher, I don’t want to leave you, I want to keep attending classes…” “Me too! Teacher, will there be more classes like this next time? I want to come again!” The students cried, reluctant to leave and take photos together.

“Initially, we wanted to hold this small class mainly to provide a place for left-behind children in the town and village to go during the holidays, recruiting university student volunteers to help them with their homework and broaden their horizons. Unexpectedly, more and more parents and students became interested in the class and signed up. To facilitate everyone’s attendance, we also expanded the class to rural areas,” said a relevant person in charge of the Youth League Committee in Mashan Town. “With this experience, we will continue to hold such summer classes in the future, providing children in the area with more opportunities to see the world.” (Correspondent: Qin Yao)
