Insurance Company with 80 Million Customers Achieves Database Localization with MogDB for Autonomous Control

Due to the unique nature of their business, financial institutions often hold vast amounts of customer data, including personal information, transaction records, and financial status, which are crucial to the national economy and people’s livelihoods. Therefore, ensuring data security and preventing leakage risks is particularly important. On the other hand, the various types of data in the financial market change rapidly, and business development drives an increase in data volume, which intensifies management tasks and raises the requirements for the stability, reliability, and independence of business systems.

As one of the most important foundational software, databases are the cornerstone for ensuring the stable operation of business systems. However, the current situation is that most core systems of domestic financial institutions use foreign database products, lacking autonomous control capabilities. At the same time, these systems face numerous challenges in responding to diverse business developments. To achieve autonomous control and address new business challenges, the localization of databases is imperative. The insurance industry, as one of the three pillars of national finance, is actively participating in this process.

High Compatibility and High Performance are Both Essential

China United Life Insurance Company (hereinafter referred to as “United Life”) is one of the top ten life insurance companies in China. Since its establishment in 2005, it has grown to nearly 100,000 employees, 27 provincial branches, over 600 branch offices, and nearly 150 billion yuan in total assets. As of 2020, the total number of customers served by the company reached 81.12 million. To ensure the security of customer transaction data and achieve autonomous control, United Life began its localization transformation.

Database replacement is a crucial part of United Life’s localization transformation. The compliance management platform and risk management system being transformed are important business systems in the insurance industry, characterized by broad interaction and complex hierarchical structures. United Life hopes that the domestic database can support more efficient and accurate transaction risk identification on the current system architecture, comprehensively ensuring data access security, and optimizing management workflows on this basis. However, with so many domestic database products available, how should they be selected? To this end, United Life has proposed specific evaluation criteria for candidate databases in terms of compatibility, performance, and service assurance. “The current databases for the compliance management platform and risk management system are all Oracle. After the localization replacement, the continuity and stability of the business are key, so we particularly emphasize product compatibility in this transformation,” said the Director of the Information Technology Department at United Life. “If the product compatibility is strong enough, the number of SQL statements that need to be rewritten by technical personnel during the migration from Oracle to the target database can be significantly reduced, which not only facilitates a seamless transition but also lowers the company’s transformation costs.” He emphasized, “Additionally, we place great importance on the stability of the database kernel and the performance of the product itself. For financial institutions, the daily business volume is substantial, and in high-concurrency scenarios, the database must be able to respond quickly and stably to business demands.

MogDB and Supporting Tools Enhance System Operating Efficiency

In line with the above requirements, starting from February 2021, United Life began investigating multiple domestic databases, combining practical cases from various vendors, and ultimately chose the enterprise-level relational database MogDB from Yunyuan Enmo. MogDB is a product developed based on the kernel of the domestic open-source database openGauss, featuring high performance and high compatibility with Oracle and other characteristics, fully meeting United Life’s requirements. To successfully complete the database replacement work, Yunyuan Enmo conducted extensive testing on performance, compatibility, backup recovery, high availability, and other dimensions in collaboration with United Life, and the final test results met expectations. Subsequently, Yunyuan Enmo utilized the heterogeneous database migration tool MTK that comes with MogDB to achieve high-speed import of all data, completing the replacement of Oracle for the compliance management platform and risk management system.

Compliance Management Platform Architecture Diagram

As shown in the figure above, the compliance management platform adopts a “one master, one backup” architecture. After MogDB replaced Oracle, it utilized the Kettle tool to perform bidirectional data synchronization with the Oracle database of the core business system, while also achieving unidirectional data synchronization with the Oracle database of the CIF system, ensuring single-node fault recovery, dual-machine data synchronization, and dual-machine fault switching, thereby guaranteeing the stable operation of the database. The high-performance characteristics of MogDB can withstand significant business volume challenges. In the event of a surge in business volume, technical personnel can access the MogDB database server through load balancing F5 to meet the challenges. The master-slave architecture of the MogDB database server not only ensures high availability but also enhances its throughput, allowing MogDB’s performance to be fully realized. Additionally, MogDB’s high availability management software MogHA ensures high availability of the database master-slave cluster, maintaining stable operation of the database and continuity of business in the event of a significant increase in transaction volume. Furthermore, the BRM backup and recovery tool provides strong support for centralized backup and recovery management of the MogDB database, improving database operation and maintenance efficiency. For customers, the MogDB database and its supporting tools are user-friendly, not only meeting the company’s localization replacement needs but also achieving the goal of efficiently processing massive data such as company transactions and customer information. A large number of experts proficient in Oracle and MogDB from Yunyuan Enmo ensured a smooth migration of the database. United Life has established a customer-centric service system, striving to quickly provide customers with comprehensive financial services. After replacing Oracle with MogDB for the compliance management platform and risk management system, the overall operation is stable, and the execution efficiency of some SQL statements even exceeds that of the original environment, ensuring United Life’s service level. In the future, Yunyuan Enmo will continue to work with United Life to explore more database localization replacement solutions for business systems.Insurance Company with 80 Million Customers Achieves Database Localization with MogDB for Autonomous Control
