Introduction
In the wave of Industry 4.0, many small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises are eager to seek new development momentum through digital transformation. However, on the road to transformation, they often face a problem: the large number and variety of traditional data acquisition devices do not support newer field bus protocols or communication technologies, which ultimately makes it difficult for enterprises to take the first step in digital transformation. So, what methods can be used to connect a large number of traditional data acquisition devices while meeting the communication needs of different data acquisition devices?
Traditional data acquisition devices generally have RS232/RS485 or Ethernet interfaces, supporting serial communication, MODBUS RTU protocol, and MODBUS TCP protocol. Therefore, the most basic solution is to collect traditional device data through the MODBUS protocol and then send the data to the cloud platform through protocols such as HTTP or MQTT. This can meet the communication needs of different types of traditional data acquisition devices, and mastering one device can complete the data integration of the entire workshop or even the entire factory.
The HongKe Industrial Raspberry Pi meets the hardware interface and communication protocol requirements in the above solution, let’s take a look at how to implement this solution.

02
HongKe Industrial Raspberry Pi Implementation Plan
In this plan, the HongKe Industrial Raspberry Pi connects to multiple underlying devices’ data through the MODBUS TCP protocol and sends the data to the OneNET platform via the HTTP protocol.
1. Configure MODBUS TCP Master Station
Configure a virtual master station for each slave device, fill in the corresponding slave IP address, and configure the register address and its corresponding function code.

2. Write the program, retrieve data, and upload to OneNET platform
(1) Retrieve the corresponding register data
This involves directly reading data from Device 1 and Device 2, and processing data from Device 3

(2) Configure cloud platform credential information

(3) Upload data to the cloud platform

The complete source code is as follows:

The getByteOffset() function and readFromName() function involved in the source code come from the myCtrlLib library file, which is a library developed by HongKe. If interested, you can contact us.

Conclusion
Based on the Python library we provide, it is possible to easily implement code writing without needing highly skilled software development engineers.
In addition, the HongKe Industrial Raspberry Pi supports MODBUS RTU and MODBUS TCP and can simultaneously expand to 30 slave devices, meaning one HongKe Industrial Raspberry Pi can collect data from multiple traditional devices and send it to the cloud platform, which can reduce costs to some extent and help enterprises accelerate their digital transformation in a simple way. The program includes simple MODBUS data conversion, and for higher demands, more complex data processing and edge computing can be performed based on the Industrial Raspberry Pi.
