Getting Started with Raspberry Pi: How to Use Raspberry Pi for Entertainment

In the eighth article of our getting started series with Raspberry Pi, we will learn how to use Raspberry Pi to watch movies on Netflix and listen to music.

So far, this series of articles has covered many topics — how to select[1], purchase[2], set up[3], and update[4] your Raspberry Pi, as well as how children[5] and adults[6] can use it for different tasks (including learning Linux[7]). Today, we will switch topics and learn about some entertainment aspects! Tomorrow we will continue this topic and learn how to play games with it.

Watching TV and Movies

You can use your Raspberry Pi and Open Source Media Center[8] (OSMC) to watch Netflix[9]! OSMC is a system based on the Kodi[10] project, which you can use to play multimedia from local networks, external storage, and the internet. It has a very good reputation in the media playback application field due to its good features.

NOOBS (which we introduced in the third article[3] of this series) makes it easy to install OSMC[11] on your Raspberry Pi. NOOBS also provides another media playback system based on the Kodi project called LibreELEC[12].

Listening to Music

You can also use your Raspberry Pi to stream music from external storage or services like Spotify through the Pi Music Box[13] project. I have previously written an article[14] on this topic, but you can find the latest guides on the Pi Music Box website[15], including how to use it and DIY projects.
