On August 15, the “Minfeng Science Popularization Classroom” summer series event was held as scheduled in the Minfeng Community of Huangxiang Street. This event, themed “Learning AI Knowledge, DIY Walking Robots,” opened a wonderful science popularization journey that integrates artificial intelligence and mechanical manufacturing for the children in the community.
At the event, science popularization volunteers first introduced the basic concepts of artificial intelligence to the children through fun animations and interactive Q&A sessions, such as “Why can robots understand commands?” and “How does AI ‘learn’?” They also used examples from everyday life, such as smart speakers and robotic vacuum cleaners, to give the children a more intuitive understanding of AI. Subsequently, the volunteers focused on explaining the working principles of walking robots, including how sensors perceive the environment, how motors drive movement, and how simple programming instructions control the robot’s actions.
During the practical session, the children were divided into groups and began to DIY walking robots under the guidance of the science popularization volunteers. From identifying components such as circuit boards, motors, and sensors, to assembling them according to instructions, and then attempting to set the robot’s walking path through simple programming modules, everyone was fully engaged. When their assembled robots successfully “took their first steps” forward, the children cheered and eagerly showcased their achievements.
This event not only allowed the children to learn about AI knowledge and robot construction through hands-on practice but also stimulated their curiosity and desire to explore technology. It is reported that the Minfeng Community will continue to enrich the forms of science popularization activities, bringing more practical courses on cutting-edge technology themes, allowing children to experience the charm of technology and cultivate innovative thinking.
