The author set up RetroPie on Raspberry Pi 4 and created a custom 3D printed case inspired by the design of the PlayStation 5. It’s like a mini version of the PlayStation 5; although it cannot run modern games, it is still a pretty good small retro gaming console.
Required Items
-
Raspberry Pi 4 -
SD Card -
Micro HDMI to Standard HDMI Cable
The author also used the following tools:
-
3D Printer -
Soldering Tools
Step 1: 3D Printing
This case consists of only four parts. (The STL files can be downloaded at the end of the article)
Note: The author was a complete 3D design novice when working on this project. Therefore, this design may have flaws. Additionally, you will need glue to assemble the parts.
Step 2: Assemble the Case
Next, glue the right side panel. You can use any glue suitable for plastic.
Be careful to follow the instructions for applying glue to ensure a secure bond. Also, allow enough time for the glue to dry completely before proceeding to the next step, which helps avoid future panel detachment issues.
Step 3: Set Up RetroPie and Install ROMs
To set up RetroPie on the Raspberry Pi:
-
Insert the MicroSD card into your computer.
-
Download the RetroPie .img.gz image suitable for your Raspberry Pi model from the official website.
-
Use Raspberry Pi Imager (recommended) or other programs to write the RetroPie image to the MicroSD card.
-
Make sure to select the correct image for your Raspberry Pi model.
-
Once the writing process is complete, remove the MicroSD card from the computer and insert it into the Raspberry Pi.
-
Power on the Raspberry Pi and enjoy RetroPie gaming!

Step 4: Install Raspberry Pi
Now, we need to install the Raspberry Pi into the case. This process is simple; just place it in the designated spot and secure it with screws.
Additionally, installing the HDMI cable is also straightforward. Just plug it in from the back, connect it to the Raspberry Pi, and secure it in place. You can also choose to use some hot glue to ensure it stays in place.
Step 5: A Small Power Strip
The author prepared a compact custom PCB to enhance the appearance of this project, providing a neat layout. Its purpose is to extend the power and headphone jacks.
The installation process is simple: just slide the board into place and secure it with screws.
Once installed, you can easily make the required connections according to the instructions in the pictures.
At this point, our project is nearing completion.
Step 6: Final Stage
Now we need to glue the bottom using the same glue used to secure the right side panel.
Once the left side panel is installed, this project is complete.
Step 7: Run
To complement this mini gaming console, the author also created a small display using a 5-inch Raspberry Pi display. This is just a fun little project, but you can connect it to any display or monitor you like.
Now, you can play various retro games on it, including Nintendo, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Gear, and more.
