LoRa technology is developing rapidly abroad. However, in China, the application of LoRa seems limited, primarily consisting of private applications with small coverage, existing as isolated islands. Nevertheless, there are occasionally metropolitan-level LoRa networks with extensive coverage. In this article, we will review the currently publicly announced networks based on the LoRaWAN standard architecture.

1. Nansha District, Guangzhou (803 square kilometers)

5. Jiangsu Section of the Grand Canal

Device Vendor: August Technology (AUGTEK)

Operator: Unknown

This is likely the earliest publicly established LoRaWAN network in China. However, as a founding member of the LoRa Alliance, August Technology has faded from the market in the past two years, and it is currently unknown whether the LoRa network in this area still exists.

6. Within the 6th Ring Road of Beijing

Device Vendor: Unknown

Operator: Unknown

7. Hangzhou & Ningbo

On March 28, China Unicom, Alibaba Cloud, and Semtech jointly announced the “first metropolitan IoT trial commercial use in China,” mentioning that Unicom’s LoRa trial commercial network has covered the cities of Hangzhou and Ningbo.

Device Vendor: Semtech

Operator: China Unicom, Alibaba

However, according to related reports, there are over 10 private/experimental LoRaWAN networks in China. Clearly, compared to the NB-IoT networks dominated by traditional telecom operators, the coverage area of LoRaWAN networks is still very small. What other LoRaWAN networks do you know of?
