The 2025 government work report clearly states the need to continuously promote the “Artificial Intelligence +” initiative, vigorously developing new generation intelligent terminals such as smart robots and intelligent manufacturing equipment. Smart elderly care has become one of the important ways to address the challenges of an aging population. As embodied intelligent robots gradually move from the laboratory to real-world applications, they will reshape the new ecosystem of the silver economy in the future.
Across the country, embodied intelligent robots have already been piloted in nursing homes, communities, and households, quietly rewriting the narrative of traditional elderly care as “digital children.” Currently, the application of embodied intelligent robots in the elderly care sector has transitioned from concept to reality. In some nursing homes, robots can assist with basic services such as meal delivery, cleaning, and health monitoring; in home settings, companion robots equipped with voice interaction and fall monitoring functions are gradually becoming popular. These robots, through multimodal perception and deep reinforcement learning technologies, possess stronger autonomous decision-making and emotional interaction capabilities, enabling them to accurately identify the needs of the elderly and provide personalized companionship, such as assisting with rehabilitation training and psychological counseling. Moreover, the demand for robots expressed by elderly users creates a positive feedback loop across generations.
Despite the broad prospects, the application of embodied intelligent robots in the elderly care sector still faces multiple challenges. On the technical level, precise interaction in complex environments, long-term reliability, and safety still need optimization, and the emotional interaction capabilities and adaptability of robots in complex environments require further enhancement. Cost is also a significant factor limiting their widespread application. Additionally, the limited acceptance of new technologies by the elderly makes improving usability crucial. At the same time, ethical issues regarding privacy protection and human-robot responsibility also need to be defined.
In promoting the high-quality development of digital technology, intelligent robots are not meant to replace human warmth, nor are they cold tools; equipped with emotional computing systems, they allow for a more free expression of familial affection. With policy support, technological breakthroughs, and market cultivation, embodied intelligent robots are expected to enable more elderly individuals to enjoy the convenience and dignity brought by technology in their later years.
