Advancements in Display Technology: miniLED, MicroLED, OLED, and LCD Innovations

Advancements in Display Technology: miniLED, MicroLED, OLED, and LCD InnovationsIn October, the technology industry was bustling, and on October 22, it was even more so, not only with the highly anticipated Huawei Mate 40 series products launched that evening, but also with the grand opening of the TCL Huaxing Global Display Ecological Conference (DTC 2020).
At this conference, TCL Huaxing gathered hundreds of partners and industry experts from around the world in Shenzhen to explore the applications and future trends of new display technologies, establishing a cross-industry communication platform and building an ecological alliance for the new display industry chain.
Without further ado, as a platform focused on technology in the industry, let’s directly dive into the product technologies.
Advancements in Display Technology: miniLED, MicroLED, OLED, and LCD Innovations
miniLED & MicroLED
Since the launch of the a-si AM miniLED array screen – “MLED-星曜屏” at the Shenzhen Huaxing factory last year, TCL Huaxing has been making strides in the miniLED & MicroLED layout.
At that time, the product launch was evaluated by OLEDindustry as mini-LED moving from PCB, si to a-si TFT glass era.
More than a year later, participating in the TCL Huaxing Global Display Ecological Conference (DTC 2020), the product technology has made new breakthroughs, and the strategy has also reached a new milestone.
In terms of product technology, TCL Huaxing highlighted the launch of two “world’s first” miniLED products, namely the 142″ IGZO glass-based active MLED display and the 48″ 8K In-cell Touch AM Mini-LED backlit curved vehicle screen.
Everyone must have noticed that this time it is based on an IGZO glass substrate, while last year it was based on an amorphous silicon glass substrate. As professionals in the display industry, I will not elaborate on these two backing technologies here. The active Mini-LED display product based on the IGZO glass substrate uses an 11″ unit as the smallest splicing unit, with single-point control paired with industry-leading black-state optical design, providing an extreme pure black picture experience with a million contrast ratio and a wider dynamic display range. Meanwhile, it can achieve modular infinite splicing for large screens, with free dimensions and aspect ratios, making it very suitable for diverse commercial display scenarios such as office conference machines, command centers, theaters, etc. This product can be said to be a continuation and innovation of last year’s amorphous silicon-based MLED product.

Mini-LED backlighting has clearly become an important direction for upgrading LCD panels. In the current display field, HDR has become a standard feature for high-end televisions, and Mini-LED technology can easily meet the current HDR standards. In the future, Mini-LED will accelerate its penetration into the display market, allowing displays to return to picture quality itself, and will improve the situation where LCD panel products have no chance against OLED panel products in market share competition.
This 48″ ultra-large vehicle display, about 1.4 meters long, spans the entire A-pillar, integrating instrument, central control, and co-driver entertainment functions, combined with an R4200 curved design, allowing for better integration with the car’s interior design. Additionally, with the industry’s highest 8K1K resolution, the industry’s first 5096-zone AM Mini-LED backlight, and 100% NTSC, it provides an excellent driving visual experience with a million ultra-high contrast. Furthermore, the in-cell touch technology offers drivers a more comfortable and smooth manipulation experience.
It is reported that in the future, based on touch, this product can also achieve a floating touch function, allowing for perfect control through gestures.
Mini-LED is becoming the “darling” of the display field. Since 2019, giants like TCL, Apple, Hisense, ASUS, Innolux, AUO, BOE, etc. have successively launched Mini-LED backlit or similar technology televisions, monitors, VR, and vehicle display terminals. Mini LED has the characteristics of high brightness, long life, low cost, and high contrast, making it a display device used by major manufacturers, and TCL’s technology will also become one of its important supports in the industry.
In addition to miniLED, the next generation of MicroLED, considered to be the most promising, how could TCL miss out?
This time, TCL Huaxing showcased China’s first self-developed AM Micro-LED display screen based on IGZO glass substrate, developed in collaboration with Sanan.

Advancements in OLED
OLEDindustry, as a platform focused on the OLED industry, was pleasantly surprised to see the global first AM OLED cloud rollable screen and printed OLED rollable screen released today. These two products have made further advancements in the foldable screen and OLED process routes, with even more expectations for their performance.
This time, the TCL Huaxing 6.7″ AMOLED cloud rollable screen showcased a unique charm of flexible technology unlike before. With an innovative sliding rollable form, the front screen size is only 4.5″, making it very convenient to carry. Sliding the body allows the display screen to unfold to 6.7″, freely switching the display size. The product adopts the industry’s first ultra-thin 3mm rollable design, lighter and thinner; combined with industry-leading rollable and sliding compensation mechanism design, smoother; can withstand 200,000 roll and slide times, more durable. Unlike the flexible foldable phones currently on the market, the cloud rollable screen maintains the same thickness of the body while sliding the screen, making it more compact in the retracted state, allowing you to enjoy a multi-faceted view while rolling and unfolding with ease.

Additionally, TCL Huaxing provides four types of AMOLED foldable products and solutions: dual inner fold, dual O-Cut OR4 OLED foldable screen, water drop shape YIR3 foldable solution, and wedge shape VIR1.5 foldable assembly solution.
The dual inner fold OLED display screen launched this time has a size of 10″, dual inner fold IR3, allowing for seamless switching between mobile phone, tablet, and laptop forms, paired with a virtual physical keyboard, providing users with an unparalleled entertainment and mobile business office experience.
Advancements in Display Technology: miniLED, MicroLED, OLED, and LCD Innovations
As for the dual O-Cut OR4 OLED foldable screen, its size is 7.9″, boasting the industry’s smallest radius (4mm) for outer foldable phones, with an ultra-thin appearance (the thinnest side is 3mm), and an 8mm ultra-thin body, combining phone and tablet into one, featuring the industry’s first side-curved + foldable screen technology, with a unique asymmetrical thickness design (3mm, 5mm), reserving more space for the overall system.
Advancements in Display Technology: miniLED, MicroLED, OLED, and LCD Innovations
Compared to the above two products, I personally find the mass-produced foldable solutions more attractive. This time, solutions for the water drop shape foldable screen assembly (foldable OLED screen + hinge) and wedge shape VIR1.5 foldable display screen assembly were launched. Both have a size of 6.7″, adopting 50um UTG ultra-thin glass technology, with a body thickness of 7mm, and the back shell surface having antibacterial and sterilization functions (sterilization rate ≥99%), both can withstand at least 100,000 folds and can be mass-produced.
The difference is that the inner folding radius of the water drop type is 3mm, while the wedge-shaped folding bending radius is 1.5mm.
