A 20-Year Review of Embedded Systems Development

Just like in any field of development, the development of embedded systems is like the ocean: the deep ocean currents are relatively stable, while beneath the seemingly calm surface, there may be raging undercurrents. Risking being submerged, I want to express that the foundation of today’s embedded systems development is basically akin to how engineers had to toggle physical switches on hardwired microcomputers to run program code. Like those engineers, we still need to try to monitor external events and respond appropriately. So, how do we seek development amid continuous change?

On the surface, the hardware, software, and methods used to construct embedded systems have become increasingly refined—or at least different. To measure these changes, Embedded.com conducted surveys in 1999, 2009, and 2019, and now by comparing and analyzing these survey results, we can gain insight into how embedded development has evolved over the past 20 years…(Click the bottom left corner to read the original article for more details)
