Utilizing 3D printing technology
can provide tailored bone solutions for patients with bone tumors, bone injuries,
and elderly patients with bone diseases,
rebuilding bone health
and creating numerous
new orthopedic miracles.
3D Printed Vertebrae
Using 3D printing technology, it is possible to create custom vertebrae that perfectly match each patient’s own bone structure. This not only completely replaces the diseased vertebra but also allows for very effective stabilization in the patient’s cervical spine.
Additionally, because the printed vertebrae feature amicroporous design, they can better utilize the body’s own bone structure characteristics to promote bone ingrowth and fusion.
3D Printed Lumbar Interbody Fusion Devices
Interbody fusion devices are primarily used to treat lumbar disc herniation and spondylolisthesis. They serve to support, stabilize, and fuse the two vertebrae in the lumbar region.
Traditional lumbar interbody fusion devices are too rigid, which is not conducive to bone ingrowth. However, modern orthopedic surgeries can utilize 3D printing technology to create the most compatible lumbar interbody fusion devices tailored to each patient’s bone density and strength.
This allows for a reduction in hardness while ensuring sufficient strength, and features a trabecular structure that promotes bone growth and fusion.
3D Printing for Bone Defect Treatment
1. Design and print prosthetics that match the bone structure of the defect using 3D printing technology;
2. Insert an intramedullary nail into the medullary cavity, where the rotational forces on the bone primarily rely on the connection between the intramedullary nail and the 3D printed prosthetic;
3. Once the 3D printed prosthetic bone is implanted into the body, a certain compressive stress will develop at the contact surface between the prosthetic and the defective bone. Under the influence of force, the microporous design of the prosthetic can also promote bone growth and fusion.
