Valentine’s Day brings a wave of gift showcases on social media.
It’s either roses or a 520 yuan WeChat red envelope.
It feels a bit cliché.
So this post is dedicated to a thoughtful friend, Sky, showcasing his Valentine’s Day gift: “a gemstone engagement ring”.
Hello everyone, I am Sky~~ Like everyone else, I am addicted to the updates~~~ I often wait until midnight for them~~~ But I often get stood up
Back to the point, as a single man, I unexpectedly met a cute, versatile Gemini girl, Tracy, at the beginning of 2016.
To quickly obtain the “sentence of being a husband”~~ I needed to propose as soon as possible. Thus, preparing an engagement ring became an urgent matter. Initially, I thought about simply buying one!
After looking at Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, and Chow Tai Fook, I quickly realized one fact: The ones I liked were unaffordable, and the ones I could afford were unattractive.
Instantly disheartened, I was ready to settle for something mediocre.
Fortunately, as an Aries with a Capricorn rising, I possess both explosive energy and endurance. I wouldn’t give up so easily. I began to ask myself: If I can’t afford it, can I make one myself?
To validate this whimsical idea, I started searching online and discovered that my city, Guangzhou, has a globally influential gemstone trading center and a jewelry processing industrial zone. Suddenly, I felt confident; it seemed feasible to make it myself!
Rolling up my sleeves, I got to work on the design.
The inspiration came from the “Heart of the Ocean” necklace from the movie Titanic.
The deep blue glow left a profound impression on my young heart.
When I first saw it on the big screen, I believe my expression was the same as Jack’s
However, the “Heart of the Ocean” is not only a physical object but also carries deep meaning!
In the hidden ending, the elderly Rose throws the priceless gem, given to her by Jack’s rival, into the sea.
Throughout her life, she never sold this gem given by Jack’s rival to change her life. She lived according to Jack’s wishes, proving a love that transcends life and money.
I highly recommend the hidden ending of Titanic.
So I decided to create a smaller version of the “Heart of the Ocean” for my engagement ring, using the same formula from Titanic: Tanzanite + Diamond.
At the same time, I also planned to make my “Heart of the Ocean” transformable into a ring or a necklace, giving it a unique feature.
Tanzanite is Tanzania’s national gemstone, found only in Tanzania, and is rarer than diamonds. Its beautiful color has made it a new favorite in the gemstone world. In 1969, Tiffany introduced it to the international jewelry market, and its value has increased more than a hundredfold. High-end tanzanite costs $300 per carat.
So I further studied a thick book on tanzanite.
I successfully found a 7.82 carat heart-shaped tanzanite.
And a bunch of small diamonds.
Immediately, I moved to Panyu: the largest jewelry manufacturing hub in the world.
Here, many renowned brands like Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany, and Cartier have produced their jewelry. The factory I found is called “Kaizuan Wang” . Although the name is a bit…
It has also done work for many famous brands.
~~~ First, 3D modeling ~~~ The designer will create a 3D sketch based on your ideas, turning your concept into a workable plan.
Then the 3D printer comes into play ~~~~ Normally, 3D printers are not very noticeable in our daily lives. However, they are widely used in the jewelry industry (PS please ignore the microwave).
Previously, mold making required highly skilled artisans. The advent of 3D printing has greatly improved work efficiency and significantly reduced the cost of custom pieces, making it possible for ordinary people to have custom items.
Through a computer, the 3D printer’s work process can be monitored in real-time.
This small model is the printed product.
Gold is melted and poured into the mold, and the previously 3D printed wax model instantly vaporizes.
The gold solidified in the mold is the rough model, which will undergo the first polishing.
It is adjusted to the size suitable for gemstone setting and finger wearing.
After rough polishing is completed, it enters the gemstone setting stage. The craftsman will first secure the gemstone base.
Once secured, the gemstone base is completely sealed .
With the help of a microscope,
an experienced setter
will set over 70 small diamonds on the base.
During this process, there can be no mistakes; any error would require remolding.
Therefore, before officially starting, the craftsman will repeatedly consider the implementation steps.
Here’s a sneak peek from the craftsman’s perspective through the microscope.
I took a close-up shot of the small diamond setting effect. It’s dazzling.
With the auxiliary gemstones set, it’s finally time for the main gem to make its appearance.
Adjusting the position according to the size of the main gemstone.
Securing the gemstone with the grip.
Ensuring the gemstone and base fit perfectly~~ checking for any gaps between them.
The effect after the gemstone is set.
Here’s a sparkling side view.
Then, I had Tracy’s name engraved on the ring band with a laser.
It instantly reminded me of a scene from The Lord of the Rings
Completed~~~
Look~~~ This is both a ring and a necklace.
It can transform according to Tracy’s needs.
Here’s a group photo~~~ Thanks to the craftsmen who spent nearly a week making the ring.
Your superb skills and forward-thinking concepts~~~ have integrated high technology with traditional craftsmanship.
Finally, here are some ID photos of the transformable ring~~
I hope that by using the platform of the “poisonous little” (a nickname for a popular influencer), Tracy will see my heartfelt effort on her WeChat Moments when she wakes up.
Put on the ring and quickly sentence me to “being a husband”
