Xiaomi's Self-Developed Smartphone SoC Set to Debut

On April 15, according to Sina Technology, Xiaomi recently announced internally the establishment of a Chip Platform Department under the Product Department of the mobile division, appointing Qin Muyun as the head of the Chip Platform Department, reporting to Li Jun, the general manager of the Product Department.

In response, Wang Hua, general manager of Xiaomi Group’s public relations department, later stated on Weibo, “The Chip Platform Department of the mobile product division has always existed, and its main work is to evaluate and customize the chip platform for mobile products. The head, Qin Muyun, has been with the company for several years; at least we have work chat records from 2021 at Xiaomi’s office.”

According to information, Qin Muyun previously worked at Qualcomm as a senior director of product marketing before joining Xiaomi, bringing with him considerable experience and resources in the chip industry.

As for self-developed smartphone chips, Xiaomi officially released its first self-developed smartphone chip, the Surge S1, back in February 2017, which was first used in the Xiaomi 5C, making it the fourth smartphone brand globally to have its own smartphone chip after Apple, Samsung, and Huawei.

However, unfortunately, the Surge S1 did not succeed in the market due to its weak baseband capabilities (it did not support Unicom’s 3G and 4G network standards and did not support any network standards of Telecom). The development of the Surge S2 also faced multiple tape-out failures, leading Xiaomi to temporarily abandon the development of smartphone SoCs. Subsequently, Xiaomi shifted its focus to the self-development of relatively simpler peripheral chips such as ISP chips (Surge C series) and power management chips (Surge P series).

It wasn’t until 2021 that Xiaomi re-established a chip design subsidiary—Shanghai Xuanjie Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Xuanjie”), which not only has a registered capital of 1.5 billion yuan but is also directly led by Zeng Xuezhong, Xiaomi’s senior vice president, who was previously the CEO of domestic smartphone chip manufacturer Unisoc. In June 2023, Xuanjie Technology also increased its capital, raising its registered capital from 1.5 billion yuan to 1.92 billion yuan. In October of the same year, Beijing Xuanjie Technology Co., Ltd. was established with a registered capital of 3 billion yuan, also led by Zeng Xuezhong.

According to relevant leaks since last year, Xiaomi’s self-developed next-generation smartphone SoC chip is nearing completion. This chip is built on TSMC’s N4P process technology and features an octa-core tri-cluster CPU architecture, including an Arm Cortex-X925 super core, and integrates an Immortalis-G925 GPU, with overall performance comparable to the Snapdragon 8 Gen2. The baseband chip may use an external MediaTek or Unisoc 5G baseband chip.

It is expected that the new Xiaomi 15S Pro, set to be released this year, may be equipped with the new self-developed SoC, which will feature a 6100mAh silicon-carbon anode battery and support 90W fast charging, as well as UWB ultra-wideband technology, allowing it to interact with the Xiaomi SU7 electric vehicle.
