Qualcomm China officially published an article yesterday (August 4) providing a forward-looking introduction to the main features, definitions, and infrastructure of Wi-Fi 8: Wi-Fi 8 is currently being defined, with the goal of prioritizing reliable performance in complex real-world environments, ensuring excellent connectivity even in scenarios with network congestion, high interference, and strong mobility.
According to reports, the Wi-Fi standard is developed by a global team of engineers and technical experts who collaborate within the IEEE 802.11 standards organization. Several technology companies are actively participating in the standardization of Wi-Fi 8. This project is led by the IEEE802.11bn working group under the framework of “Ultra High Reliability” (UHR).According to current standards, Wi-Fi performance metrics can achieve multi-gigabit throughput, latency below 10 milliseconds, and a packet loss rate of less than 0.1%. The goal of Wi-Fi 8 is to go further, not only to surpass Wi-Fi 7, but also to achieve quantifiable performance leaps in the most challenging scenarios. According to the IEEE scope document, Wi-Fi 8 will bring:
IT Home has learned from Qualcomm China that Wi-Fi 8 is being defined as a foundational connectivity base that empowers the thriving ecosystem, with the key being the new features introduced during the 802.11bn standardization process, specifically as follows:
In addition, Wi-Fi 8 is expected to bring transformative changes to environments that require high-performance wireless connectivity.
The formulation of the 802.11bn standard is a collaborative effort within the 802.11 working group, and the standard is currently progressing steadily, with a high degree of consensus reached on a significant portion of the new standard content. It is expected that the Wi-Fi Alliance certification will occur in January 2028, followed by final approval from the working group in March.
Next, the 802.11bn working group will continue to refine and finalize the foundation for the future Wi-Fi 8 generation standards. It is expected that this generation of Wi-Fi will again be applied to billions of terminal devices over the next decade.
