PLC Technology
Huawei’s new smart home host is a smart home system host based on PLC. It is important to note that PLC here refers to Power Line Communication and not the Programmable Logic Controller used in industrial applications.
From a theoretical standpoint, this technology is a hybrid between bus technology and wireless communication technology, where signals are transmitted through electrical lines, allowing communication wherever there is power. In terms of communication reliability, it is superior to wireless communication technology.
From the perspective of deployment convenience, it is more flexible than pure wired systems, although it is less flexible than wireless systems. In fact, those familiar with Huawei’s strategy will notice that Huawei has also released a PLC+IoT industrial control system in the industrial sector, which operates on principles very similar to those of the smart home host. One can think of the smart home host as a manifestation of the PLC+IoT communication technology in the smart home field. This means that this strategy is currently quite different from Xiaomi’s purely wireless communication approach, with the two corresponding to two distinct market segments.
What is the Market Outlook?
If Huawei’s PLC chips are stable and can avoid electrical noise, the future of smart homes could indeed revolutionize the bus technology;
1. No need for large home electrical panels, and no relays are required; don’t underestimate this issue;
2. No need to pull buses; electricians will be able to handle new project renovations, and switch panels can be made according to socket panels, reducing technical difficulty;
3. Debugging difficulty is reduced; just plug in the gateway and set it up via the phone; 485 requires programming, KNX requires programming, not to mention more complex systems like AMX and Crestron. The entry barrier is lowered;
4. Old renovation projects are also simple; just add a neutral wire to the original switch panels; the market scope is large;
5. Price advantage; note that the terminal price is 99,999; currently, the market price for bus terminals is similar, so it won’t disrupt the market or create strong backlash;
6. Strong future scalability; after all, Huawei’s expansion includes its own large screens and HIcar; the foundation of a large company is unmatched by ordinary firms, so KNX manufacturers are trembling (KNX requires development fees, membership fees, testing fees); let’s wait and see, if PLC is unstable, the above points are moot!
