Shortly after the end of the Cold War, the world-renowned firearms manufacturer SIG designed a suitable close-quarters battle rifle for the Swiss special police forces. This led to the creation of the SIG 552 assault rifle, nicknamed “The Commando.” The SIG 552 assault rifle was launched in 1998 and is the shortest model in the SIG 55X series. It is a CQB tactical short assault rifle designed under the influence of modern trends, with a barrel shortened to 226.06mm compared to the SIG 551 assault rifle, and a rearward shift in the center of gravity to facilitate control and improve shooting accuracy. The trigger guard can fold to the left or right, allowing operation even while wearing gloves.

Compared to the most popular MP5 series in the world today, even though the SIG551 series has the advantage of using rifle cartridges, its configuration is not inferior. However, it still feels slightly larger than a carbine in terms of grip and carry. The grip feel and compactness of the MP5 (excluding the SD silenced version) are more snug. Therefore, the improvement focus of the SIG552 is on shortening the front half of the rifle’s barrel and piston system, making it an assault rifle almost the same length as a modern submachine gun.

Compared to the SIG 551 assault rifle, the SIG 552 assault rifle has noticeable changes. It still uses the long-stroke piston system of the AK assault rifle, but the previous designs of the SIG 551 series employed a design where the bolt carrier and piston connecting rod were separated (when disassembled), with the charging handle serving as a coupling pin. The recoil spring is placed inside the gas tube to push the connecting rod forward.

Due to the limited space caused by the shortening of the front section of the rifle, the recoil spring has been moved to the rear section of the bolt carrier (with the addition of a recoil spring guide rod), similar to the AK assault rifle’s design. Therefore, the bolt and piston of the SIG 552 assault rifle are welded together, with only the charging handle remaining a separate piece due to the constraints of the receiver structure, but it is also more elegantly designed.
