From “Internet +” to “IoT +”, IoT technology is becoming a key player in the new generation of information technology. The IoT is the “internet” of interconnected objects, capable of wide applications in network integration through technologies such as intelligent perception, real-time identification, and ubiquitous computing. It is thus referred to as the third wave of world information industry development following computers and the internet.
The market potential for IoT technology is enormous: McKinsey researchers estimate that by 2025, the potential economic benefits brought by IoT will range from $3.9 trillion to $11.1 trillion annually. The highest level of benefits, including consumer surplus, could reach 11% of global economic benefits.
According to data from Juniper Research, the number of IoT connected devices was 13.4 billion in 2015 and is expected to reach 38.5 billion by 2020. IDC predicts that the global IoT market size will grow from $700 billion in 2015 to $1.7 trillion by 2020, with a compound annual growth rate of nearly 20%.
In recent years, our IoT industry has shown remarkable growth. From 2014 to 2016, the scale of China’s IoT industry grew from 600 billion to 930 billion yuan. It is expected to exceed 1.8 trillion yuan by 2020.
Demand for IoT Talent
During the 12th Five-Year Plan period, key areas in the IoT industry include intelligent transportation, intelligent logistics, smart grids, smart healthcare, smart manufacturing, smart agriculture, environmental protection, smart home, and smart security.
All major fields of IoT require a large number of talents. According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the demand for intelligent IoT talents will exceed 10 million in the next five years.
Characteristics of IoT Major
The major represents opportunity; the major represents the future. Our IoT application technology major (focusing on environmental protection applications) is currently the first and only IoT major in Guangdong Province targeting the environmental protection application field.
Training Objectives for IoT Major
This major cultivates individuals with strong political beliefs, both moral and technical skills, and comprehensive development, possessing good professional qualities and mastering knowledge and technical skills related to IoT such as sensors, wireless networking, integrated wiring, and microcontroller development. Graduates will work in environmental technology companies and IoT-related enterprises, engaging in the design and implementation of environmental IoT system solutions, system operation and maintenance, research and development, installation and debugging of terminal devices, technical support, product sales, and will possess certain innovation and entrepreneurial abilities along with strong practical skills.
Core Courses of IoT Major
Sensor technology, RFID technology, environmental monitoring equipment technology and application, smart hardware application development, IoT network technology, integrated wiring, wireless networking technology application, environmental IoT system design and implementation, IoT system innovation practice training, IoT project management, environmental monitoring system design and implementation.
Experimental Teaching Equipment
Educational quality begins with curriculum development. The IoT major has introduced leading domestic R&D platforms, establishing professional laboratories of four different types, as well as six specialized technical laboratories to meet practical training requirements.
