Recently, MediaTek launched the Dimensity 800U mobile platform, which has been first adopted by the realme X7. As a new player in the 5G SoC field, how does the Dimensity 800U compare to its predecessors like the Dimensity 800 and Dimensity 720, and is its performance worth our expectations?
Although the Dimensity 800U belongs to the Dimensity 8 series, it is essentially derived from the Dimensity 720. For instance, both are composed of 2 Cortex-A76 big cores and 6 Cortex-A55 small cores, integrate a Mali-G57MC3 GPU, support up to 12GB LPDDR4X memory, and the latest UFS2.2 flash storage (which can be understood as UFS2.1 + TurboWrite, similar to the relationship between UFS3.0 and UFS3.1), natively support 120Hz refresh rate screens, and up to 64-megapixel cameras with a quad-camera matrix.
It is important to note that whether a device is equipped with a 120Hz refresh rate screen and UFS2.2 flash storage depends on the specific product’s cost and positioning; it does not mean that all smartphones equipped with the Dimensity 800U will necessarily adopt these technologies.Next, let’s take a look at the performance differences between the Dimensity 800U and its predecessors. Thanks to its higher clock speed, its overall benchmark scores and single-core performance are higher than that of the Dimensity 800. However, in multi-core testing, it falls behind the Dimensity 800, which has 4 big cores.
In terms of 3D performance, although both the Dimensity 800U and Dimensity 720 integrate the Mali-G57MC3, the former shows a significant improvement in 3DMark test scores, coming very close to the Mali-G57MC4 integrated in the Dimensity 800, indicating that the Dimensity 800U likely has a higher GPU frequency.
Overall, the Dimensity 800U is on par with the Dimensity 800, with theoretical performance slightly inferior to the Snapdragon 765G, but superior to the Samsung Exynos 980, Exynos 880, and Snapdragon 690 among 5G SoCs, making it a reliable choice for 5G smartphones priced around 1,000 yuan.
