In June 2023, the Suzhou Branch of the Teacher Education College of Nanjing University was officially launched, and the Suzhou High-tech Zone Teacher Professional Growth Workshop was also inaugurated at the same time. During the summer vacation, two mentors carefully arranged the semester plan and tailored high-quality courses for students. In September, the calligraphy workshop and maker workshop series training officially began! As of now, the two workshops have conducted regular training 9 times, insisting on one session per week, combining online and offline methods, with lectures corresponding to practical operations, embedding traditional culture deeply in the heart, and illuminating the future with scientific spirit.

The Ministry of Education recently issued the “Guidelines for Improving the Education of Excellent Traditional Chinese Culture,” emphasizing the need to enhance the systematic nature of traditional Chinese culture education content, improve the curriculum and textbook system, and strengthen the construction of related teacher teams. Calligraphy, as an important part of traditional Chinese culture, has received high attention.
The Calligraphy Workshop aims to help school teachers appreciate the charm of calligraphy art, improve their writing skills and artistic aesthetic abilities, solidify the basic skills of calligraphy teaching, and promote the development of calligraphy education through training, exchanges, and practice. Students are all calligraphy teachers or candidates for calligraphy education in schools, and many students are already members of the Calligraphy Association of the High-tech Zone or even Suzhou City.

Calligraphy is an ancient art that carries excellent culture and historical traditions, showcasing artistic charm and the spirit of the times. I am honored to be a student in the district-level calligraphy workshop. Every Friday, we gather to learn various calligraphy styles such as regular script, clerical script, seal script, and running script. Director Jin provides detailed explanations and demonstrations on brush techniques, ink techniques, and layout techniques, guiding us from selecting, reading, and copying models, as well as leading us to observe various master works and appreciate the charm of ink. I am deeply impressed by Director Jin’s profound calligraphy skills, extensive knowledge, and efficient teaching. Through two months of study, we have initially mastered the beauty of calligraphy lines, the beauty of strength, and the beauty of expression. “There is no shortcut in calligraphy, only hard work,” I will strive to improve through diligent learning.

As the ancients said, “Words are the voice of the heart. Writing is the painting of the heart.” I, who love calligraphy, am fortunate to participate in the calligraphy workshop organized by the district education development center. After nine weeks of systematic study, I have gained a deeper understanding of calligraphy knowledge and further recognized the important responsibility of educators in inheriting calligraphy art. During the training, Teacher Jin not only introduced and analyzed various fonts in detail but also patiently demonstrated, explaining each stroke, technique, and structure very thoroughly. In my future studies, I will strive to delve deeper, practice diligently, and improve my level in calligraphy art, hoping to engrave the beautiful scenery of the prosperous era with my brush alongside my students!

Since September, I have been fortunate to participate in the “Teacher Professional Development Workshop” training organized by the district education development center. Under Teacher Su’s patient and professional guidance, I have encountered knowledge that I have never learned before, studying Arduino integrated experimental board maker programming, understanding multiple module functions, writing programs through COM3 serial port, connecting to the corresponding main control port of Arduino Mega 2560, achieving light-sensitive sensors to generate light-sensitive waveform diagrams, and experiencing interesting experiments such as simulating alarms and music with buzzers. I grow in learning and practice in growth. I will seize every opportunity for learning and practice to improve myself, wholeheartedly serving maker education, and striving to cultivate students’ thinking ability, hands-on ability, and problem-solving ability.

Maker education is a new type of educational model that allows children to learn by doing and play while learning, while integrating knowledge from various subjects to enhance students’ comprehensive abilities. During the training, Teacher Su patiently explained, we actively asked questions, hands-on practice, and mutual communication, gaining a new understanding of maker education, understanding the core concepts of innovation, practice, and sharing, and being able to model and program independently. In the future, I hope to lead students with a new approach in my work, allowing them to use new digital technologies to design, create, share, and experience cross-temporal and spatial learning, igniting innovative dreams.
