WeBank’s New Headquarters Building
SOM has officially completed the design of WeBank’s new headquarters building this year. WeBank, a subsidiary of Tencent, is China’s first internet bank and a leading enterprise in the fintech sector, defined by the internationally renowned independent research firm Forrester as “the world’s leading digital bank.”This 148-meter tall, 30-story tower is located in the Qianhai Business District of Shenzhen, pioneering a redefinition of future-oriented office spaces centered on health.

The design prioritizes employee comfort, flexible space adaptation, and efficient operations, creating an office environment that meets the demands of the digital age through a deep integration of natural concepts and cutting-edge technology. SOM partner Scott Duncan emphasizes that the building itself is a tangible expression of WeBank’s mission—effectively promoting connections and collaboration among employees through the integration of public terraces, shared atriums, and intelligent spaces.

The architectural form is visually striking: interlaced floors and a double-height structure create a “breathing” porous facade, significantly optimizing natural ventilation and lighting effects.
The interior features a transparent and open layout, allowing employees easy access to outdoor terraces to connect with nature. Over 4,000 square meters of flexible floor space meet the rapidly evolving business needs of fintech companies. The multi-level indoor atrium serves as a vibrant link connecting different departments, while facilities such as a basketball court, gym, outdoor swimming pool, employee cafeteria, and multifunctional hall foster a community atmosphere that balances work and life.

SOM’s design is rooted in health concepts and sustainable development strategies. The tower has achieved LEED Platinum certification and is applying for the China Green Building Three-Star mark.

In response to Shenzhen’s subtropical climate, the project integrates advanced passive and active environmental strategies: a solar-responsive facade effectively filters glare and reduces heat absorption; cantilevered and recessed balconies significantly reduce solar radiation and lower cooling demands.

A highly efficient natural ventilation system is at the core—supported by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis, adjustable facades work in conjunction with the atrium utilizing the “chimney effect” to continuously draw in fresh air like a giant fan.
A network of environmental sensors intelligently monitors outdoor conditions, opening natural ventilation only at optimal times. As air flows through terraces planted with native Lingnan vegetation, it undergoes natural filtration of pollutants and optimization of the microbial environment.

The rooftop landscape garden provides a resting place for employees, with an integrated rainwater collection system for irrigation and runoff management. The reserved space for solar equipment installation on the roof also echoes WeBank’s long-term vision for sustainable development.
