Robobee: The Bee Robot That Flies and Swims

Robobee is a micro-bionic robot developed by a research team at Harvard University for a long time. Weighing only 80 grams, it can flap its wings at a frequency of 120Hz and fly like a bee in the air. The latest version of Robobee is capable of operating underwater, becoming an all-weather “little bee”.

Researchers have equipped it with four stabilizers to maintain underwater balance; a small box in the middle of the body contains a miniature electrochemical device that ionizes water into hydrogen and oxygen to control buoyancy in water. When Robobee needs to ascend from the water surface, it ignites these gases with an electric spark, launching the “little bee” into the air, thus solving the control problem of transitioning from underwater to airborne. Although the soaked “little bee” cannot continue flying in the air, it can land on the shore and wait for its body to dry. Researchers have been working on this project for over ten years, and through continuous improvements in functionality and design, they hope that Robobee can play a practical role in exploration and rescue in the future.
