Yesterday, Qualcomm finally released the detailed technical specifications of its new flagship platform, the Snapdragon 865. In addition to 5G support, the Snapdragon 865 also supports 200-megapixel sensors, which has garnered significant attention.
At the Snapdragon Technology Summit, Qualcomm revealed a major announcement: “We are currently collaborating with camera manufacturers to develop a 200-megapixel sensor for smartphones” to be used with the Snapdragon 865.
Qualcomm has not disclosed more details about this 200-megapixel sensor, nor has it revealed the name of the supplier or potential first models. However, based on the current situation, Qualcomm has limited options, with only Samsung and Sony possessing such technological capabilities in the camera sensor field. It is understood that the 200-megapixel sensor will officially launch next year.
The Snapdragon 865 significantly upgrades photography capabilities, featuring the Spectra 480 CV-ISP, which can capture 8K video, 4K HDR video, 4K slow-motion video, and 960FPS super slow-motion video, with support for up to 200-megapixel sensors.
Although the Snapdragon 865’s performance is powerful enough, the A13’s single-core score still exceeds 5000, far surpassing all competitors. During an interview with Qualcomm’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of Mobile Business, Cristiano Amon, a question was raised regarding the actual competitor for Android flagship phones using the Snapdragon 865, which is the iPhone. Apple’s A-series chips clearly lead in performance over Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 series chips. While Apple has an inherent advantage, can Qualcomm surpass Apple’s A-series chips in the future through technological breakthroughs?
Amon explained that Apple’s processors, including the latest A13, are designed for maximum power, while Qualcomm’s design focuses on optimal efficiency and sustained performance. There is a clear difference between the two.
Amon elaborated that when considering the sustained use of an application, the performance curve of Qualcomm chips is stable, while Apple’s A-series chips fluctuate.
He emphasized that in terms of sustained performance of CPU and GPU, the Snapdragon 865 chip outperforms the A13 chip. Moreover, in many aspects of application processing, such as camera and AI performance, Qualcomm significantly surpasses Apple. Therefore, Android flagships using the Snapdragon 865 are superior in sustained performance compared to iPhone flagships.
