Qualcomm and Arm Compete to Acquire Semiconductor Company Alphawave!

Qualcomm and ARM have recently extended acquisition offers to the semiconductor company Alphawave.

Alphawave is based in the UK and is the fourth largest semiconductor IP vendor globally. Its flagship SerDes (Serializer-Deserializer) technology is applicable in data centers and artificial intelligence applications. With the explosion of AI applications such as ChatGPT and Gemini, the demand for SerDes technology has surged. This technology enables high-speed communication through parallel/serial data conversion, serving as the “data veins” connecting AI server clusters. Currently, companies like OpenAI rely on thousands of interconnected computers to provide services, and this technology is crucial for supporting them.

According to Alphawave‘s performance report, its fourth-quarter orders surged, with order volume increasing by 44% compared to the same period last year, reaching a record $185.7 million. CEO Tony Pialis stated in a statement that the company’s business is driven by orders from North American AI clients. The company also launched its first “silicon product” to facilitate high-speed connections for large data centers.

The first reports of acquisition interest came from Arm. According to insiders, ARM is seeking to acquire key technologies beneficial for AI processors. After receiving acquisition intentions from Arm and other potential acquirers, Alphawave has been working with its shareholders to explore the sale.

Initially, Arm hoped to enhance its AI chip capabilities by acquiring Alphawave‘s SerDes technology. SerDes technology is critical for AI applications, as chatbots like ChatGPT often require thousands of chips to work together for smooth operation. SerDes is one of Broadcom’s competitive advantages, which has claimed that SerDes helped it win clients like Google and OpenAI among others.

Although Arm has a chip design IP licensing business, it lacks in-house SerDes capabilities, and the acquisition could fill this technological gap. According to two insiders, Arm abruptly terminated acquisition negotiations after initial contact.

Recently, Qualcomm has also proposed to acquire Alphawave. According to UK acquisition rules, Qualcomm must make a clear offer by April 29, or it will be considered to have abandoned the acquisition.

However, Alphawave has a joint venture in China called WiseWave, operated in partnership with Chinese investment firm Zhilu Capital, which may impact Qualcomm’s or Arm‘s acquisition plans.
