Wei Min, a professor at Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications, doctoral supervisor, dean of the School of Automation/School of Industrial Internet, director of the Ministry of Science and Technology’s International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for the Industrial Internet of Things, and executive director of the “Belt and Road” Joint Laboratory for the China-Korea Industrial Internet of Things, is a national-level young talent and an academic technology leader in Chongqing, as well as the head of the Chongqing Talent Program – Leading Talent in Innovation and Entrepreneurship – and has been engaged in research on the Industrial Internet of Things for a long time.
The Industrial Internet has become an important field of new infrastructure and is a key driving force of a new round of industrial revolution, its importance is self-evident. Developing the Industrial Internet is an important path to promote industrial transformation and upgrading, enhance core competitiveness, and achieve high-quality industrial development. As an emerging category of industrial systems, the Industrial Internet represents, in a narrow sense, a comprehensive integration of industry and the internet, deeply intertwined and symbiotic; in a broad sense, it aims to promote the comprehensive realization of internet transformation in all areas of industrial production, thereby enhancing the efficiency and quality of industrial production, empowering industrial systems, and enabling them to create higher-level and better-quality value.
▲ Industrial Field-Level Network ArchitectureThe Industrial Internet of Things is the core of the Industrial Internet. The Industrial Internet of Things empowers the rapid development of smart manufacturing, promotes the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry, and realizes the interconnection of underlying devices and equipment, providing complete network support for enterprises. Through integration with smart manufacturing technologies, it accelerates the transformation and upgrading of key industries such as equipment, machinery, steel, and automobiles. However, with the rapid development of industrial network technologies integrating emerging technologies such as 5G and time-sensitive networks, the Industrial Internet of Things faces new model transformations, especially under the trend of integrated development of industrial field operation technologies and IT, the networking, configuration, and scheduling of heterogeneous networks have become focal points and research hotspots in academia and industry.Currently, there are numerous protocols for the Industrial Internet of Things, with varying system scales and dimensions, making network interconnection difficult and transmission efficiency low; at the same time, we are in an era of rapid development of smart factories, needing to complete the transformation of new models for the Industrial Internet of Things, providing important technical support for smart factories. The existence of these pain points has always affected the rapid development of the Industrial Internet. Solving the challenges of heterogeneous integration and application of the Industrial Internet of Things has become the foundation for promoting its rapid development.
▲ Integrated Architecture of “Integrated Networking – Unified Configuration – Collaborative Scheduling – Process Control”For a long time, many industry friends have asked me to recommend a book on the Industrial Internet of Things that systematically explains what it is. Later, I found that there is a lack of related books on the market. Many organizations and institutions have invited me to give reports to systematically introduce and explain technologies related to the Industrial Internet of Things, but due to time constraints, I have not been able to provide a comprehensive overview of the development, key technologies, and application cases of the Industrial Internet of Things. Listeners and friends have suggested that I compile and publish a monograph on the Industrial Internet of Things.Coincidentally, last year I led a national key research and development project on the Industrial Internet of Things, and the team has accumulated some results. The main content of the book revolves around the new generation of Industrial Internet of Things, combining current hot technologies in information communication (5G, IPv6, edge computing, time-sensitive networks, etc.), and provides detailed introductions to the latest research results in aspects such as integrated networking, configuration, scheduling, and security of the new generation of Industrial Internet of Things, covering theoretical research and technical practice of the research team in the field of the Industrial Internet of Things; systematically providing solutions and application practices for heterogeneous networking and integration management of the Industrial Internet of Things; and systematically integrating technology with standards, incorporating the author’s latest research results in international and domestic standardization research of IoT technologies.I have gradually deepened my understanding of the structure and content of the book. Initially, I had no direction. The Industrial Internet of Things system is vast, with numerous technologies and complex applications. How to present its full picture in a single book, how to systematically explain my and my team’s understanding, interpretations of its key technologies, analyses of its application cases, and judgments on its development trends is a very challenging task. I hope this book can consolidate the consensus of the industry and academia on the Industrial Internet of Things and further facilitate communication and learning with peers.
