Following the Find, R, A, and K series, OPPO’s smartphone family welcomed a new member on April 10, 2019 – the Reno. This series features a brand new panoramic screen and a seamless body design. The Reno 10x Zoom version is equipped with 10x hybrid optical zoom technology, making it a top flagship in the smartphone arena in terms of both performance and imaging capabilities.

Today, CFan brings you the experience of the standard version of the OPPO Reno series. Although it is not armed with the Snapdragon 855 and does not feature a periscope telephoto lens, it is a perfect successor to the R17 family with its new design language, upgraded system, and a starting price of 2999 yuan.

Unboxing Experience

The OPPO Reno adopts a brand new packaging design, resembling a “full-screen phone” with its elongated proportions. The surface features a gradient layer, especially the OPPO Reno logo and the color in the bar decoration that echoes the camera module on the back of the phone, making it particularly eye-catching.

Upon opening the package, you will see the OPPO Reno itself. Hidden beneath the bottom panel are accessories such as the charger, data cable, earphones, and protective case.

The OPPO Reno supports VOOC Flash Charge 3.0, with the charger providing an input power of 5V/4A (20W).

This phone’s protective case is of excellent quality, with transparent material that does not affect the brilliance of the gradient back cover. The thickened corners maximize the chances of preventing drops and shattered screens.

Appreciating Fashion Design

Do you remember the OPPO Find X? The biggest feature of this product is the introduction of the “curved panoramic screen” and the dual-track periscope structure for the retractable camera module (interested readers can click on “Redefining the ‘Full-Screen’! OPPO Find X Review Experience“).

OPPO Find X

This time, OPPO Reno also emphasizes the “panoramic screen”. Compared to Find X, it simply lacks the “curved” feature, but with a screen-to-body ratio of up to 93.1%, it still ranks among the top tier in the smartphone field, just behind Find X’s 93.8%.

In specific data, the left and right borders of the OPPO Reno standard version are 1.59mm wide, the upper border is 1.8mm, and the lower border is only 3.49mm, creating a visual effect that the front seems to be all screen, providing a more immersive experience when gaming or watching movies.

Upon lighting up the screen, the OPPO Reno gives a stunning impression. This product uses a new generation of AMOLED screen luminescent materials, which not only fully covers the DCI-P3 color gamut but also optimizes power consumption by 8%, extending battery life while providing a true visual experience.

At the same time, the eye protection mode built into the OPPO Reno has passed the low blue light certification from the German Rhine TÜV. When this feature is activated, the screen filters out more than 56% of blue light, and there is also a special black and white display function, which turns it into an ink screen, making it very comfortable for reading novels.

Supports Always-On Display and Black-and-White Mode

To protect this screen, OPPO Reno has covered the AMOLED screen with a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 6, which can withstand continuous drops from a height of 1 meter onto rough surfaces, doubling the performance compared to Gorilla Glass 5. Coupled with the included protective case, it is not easy for OPPO Reno to get a cracked screen.

The back cover of OPPO Reno is a complete piece of 3D glass, with large curves on all four sides that fit comfortably in the hand. This series also introduces a new gradient process, creating a three-dimensional gradient effect that adds depth to the gradient. The standard version is available in four fashionable colors: Misty Sea Green, Misty Pink, Nebula Purple, and Extreme Night Black. The Misty Sea Green and Misty Pink versions achieve a dual-texture effect of glossy and matte on a single piece of glass through the industry’s first partial AG matte etching process, resulting in a more outstanding visual effect.

The back cover of OPPO Reno also adopts a symmetrical design, gathering the brand logo and other elements to the central highlight strip, aligned with the two camera lenses.

Careful readers will notice that the OPPO Reno’s camera is completely hidden inside the body and does not protrude from the surface. To prevent the lens from being scratched by sand on the table, this product adds a small ceramic O-Dot that slightly raises the camera plane when the phone is laid flat, protecting the back from scratches.

Cooler Technology Feel

Some readers may ask, where is the front camera and earpiece? It seems there is no flash on the back either?

OPPO Reno Review: A Hidden Camera Experience

This is another selling point of the OPPO Reno – the retractable camera module. Unlike the earlier Find X’s “dual-track periscope structure,” OPPO Reno uses a new “side-rotating lift structure”. The motor, screw rod, and other components are located on one side of the body. When we run the camera app or other functions that require camera permissions (such as facial recognition), a triangular camera module pops up from the top of the phone, containing the front camera, front soft light, earpiece, and rear flash.

This side-rotating lift structure can open or close in just 0.8 seconds, and the official data indicates it can be used continuously over 200,000 times. Even if activated 100 times a day, it has a lifespan of 5 years. By the way, the OPPO Reno’s retractable camera module also supports an intelligent drop protection mechanism. When it accidentally slips, the phone detects its status and automatically retracts the side-rotating lift structure to protect it from damage.

In addition to hiding the camera and earpiece inside the phone, eliminating the openings on the screen surface, this product also features a new generation of optical fingerprint recognition, with the fingerprint recognition module hidden beneath the AMOLED screen. By increasing the brightness of the unlocking area and improving the algorithm, the OPPO Reno’s fingerprint unlocking success rate and speed have improved, making the experience very close to traditional capacitive fingerprint recognition technology.

Upgraded Imaging

The OPPO Reno standard version features a dual rear camera design, with the main camera model being the Sony IMX 586, a 48-megapixel 1/2.0-inch sensor. Reno is also equipped with an f/1.7 aperture and introduces composite multi-frame noise reduction and HDR technology, supporting handheld stabilization, night scene noise reduction, and highlight suppression, gaining stronger photographic capabilities than its predecessors, the R17 Pro and Find X, thanks to its inherent advantage of a larger sensor.

OPPO Reno Review: A Hidden Camera Experience

To be honest, the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom version is the real perfect camera matrix, consisting of a 48-megapixel main camera (IMX 586), a 13-megapixel periscope long-focus lens, and an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens (IMX319). It supports “10X hybrid optical zoom” and a unique “handover” algorithm, covering the entire focal length range from 16mm to 160mm – 1X and 2X are handled by the main camera, 6X by the telephoto lens, and 10X by the combination of the main camera and telephoto hybrid zoom, while the ultra-wide mode is handled by the ultra-wide lens.

The second camera of the standard version OPPO Reno is a 5-megapixel depth sensor, which can achieve hardware-level background blurring effects. Its front camera, like the 10x zoom version, is also 16-megapixels, with excellent beautification effects for selfies.

The OPPO Reno defaults to 12-megapixel mode for photography, with the option to manually select the 48-megapixel mode in the settings, and it can also customize the watermark suffix, which is quite interesting.

Standard Hardware Configuration

The hardware configuration of the OPPO Reno standard version is quite standard. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 mobile platform, which uses the same 10nm LPP process as Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 845 from 2018. It has upgraded its core architecture to the Kryo 360, based on ARM’s latest Cortex A75/A55 “modification”, and integrates the latest Adreno 616 GPU, with ISP and DSP specifications matching those of the Snapdragon 845. Its AI performance can reach twice that of the Snapdragon 660.

The OPPO Reno standard version comes with either 6GB or 8GB of dual-channel LPDDR4X memory, and the built-in flash memory version is also UFS2.1. However, from the AndroBench test, it appears that the Reno standard version’s flash memory is likely a single-channel version of UFS2.1, rather than the full dual-channel version.

In terms of overall performance, the OPPO Reno standard version is at the average level of mid-to-high-end Android phones. However, with the newly upgraded GameBoost 2.0 feature (supporting Frame Boost and Touch Boost), it can allocate system resources more reasonably and improve the touch screen response speed, enabling faster aiming in games and more accurate skills in multiplayer online battles. Both Honor of Kings and PUBG can run at full frame rates of 60fps and 30fps.

If you are not satisfied with this level of performance, you might consider the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom version, which is equipped with a horizontal linear motor, copper tube liquid cooling, stereo speakers, three microphones for stereo recording, and a larger 4065mAh battery. Most importantly, the 10x Zoom version is armed with the latest Snapdragon 855 mobile platform, leaving no regrets in terms of design, functionality, or performance.

Overview of ColorOS 6 System

The OPPO Reno series has upgraded to the new ColorOS 6 system, which adjusts various aspects such as UI layout, colors, and fonts, allowing ColorOS 6 to provide consumers with a more immersive experience on full-screen phones.
