Currently, news about Android Q has been leaked. Android Q (Android 10 is the 10th version of the Android system launched by Google). Here we organize the system name and new features of Android Q.

The name of Android Q:

We are eager to know which name Android Q will use this year as the system name. We know that every year when Android is named, many names are proposed. But which one is used is decided by Google. We have selected the following several names that may become the new system name.

  • Android Quesito (ke-see-toe)

  • Android Quindim

  • Android Quiche

  • Android Qottab (Ghottab)

  • Quince (kwins)

  • Queen of Puddings

  • Quarabiya (Kurabiye)

  • Queijadas

Shouldn’t the traditional Android system name be a dessert name?

When will it be released?

The release time of the Android system has been almost the same for several years. Therefore, the release date of Android Q is expected to be not much different from previous years, unless there is some issue on Google’s side.

Usually, we will see the first developer preview version around March. Then, at Google I/O, Google releases another developer preview version with more new features and optimizations. Finally, in the first week of August, we will have the freshly baked Android version on our phones.

The above information is purely personal speculation, and the official has not yet confirmed it. If we speculate based on the release dates after KitKat, I think the official version of Android Q may be launched around August 6.

10 Major New Features

The following content comes from XDA Developer. They obtained information related to the early version of Android Q through the February 2019 security patch. However, it may not be the developer preview version released months later. That said, these features are indeed highly anticipated.

1. Dark Mode

The dark mode of Android Q is different from that of Android Pie. In Android Q, the dark mode applies everywhere. If an app does not support dark mode, the system will automatically set a dark mode.

2. Desktop Mode Android Q will support desktop mode, similar to Samsung Dex and Huawei’s projection mode. It provides a PC-like experience, but it cannot replace a PC.

3. Enhanced Privacy Android Q will also utilize more privacy features introduced in Android Pie. In Android Q, you can choose whether an app can access your location when running in the background.

Additionally, when an app uses your location data, microphone, or camera, you will see corresponding icons in the notification bar. It will tell you which app is using that permission.

There is also a new dedicated privacy page in Android Q. It shows the exact number of apps that have access to your contacts, messages, and other sensitive information.

4. Super Lock Mode Currently, Android Pie has a lock mode that can disable the fingerprint sensor, but I guess Android Q will have some sort of super lock mode.

Leaked information includes a “sensor off” toggle that puts the device in airplane mode and disables all sensors on the phone.

5. Screen Recording

Android Q supports screen recording, just like iOS. In the leaked information, we found that the screen recording feature is not yet perfect and can be turned on by long-pressing the “screenshot” option in the power menu.

6. Removal of Android Beam The option for Android Beam, which was used to share files between devices, has disappeared. This feature was hardly used by anyone, so its removal probably won’t be felt by many.

But if my assumption is correct, Google may be developing a new file-sharing feature for Android, similar to Apple’s AirDrop and the sharing feature on Windows 10. It would not be surprising to see it on Chromebooks.

7. Carrier Lock If you buy a carrier-locked Android Q device, they will have the ability to prevent you from using SIM cards from other specific carriers.

8. Facial Recognition. The XDA team discovered a string of code indicating that Android 10 will have built-in facial recognition capabilities. This means official support for a facial unlock system by Google.

9. Prevent Background Access to Clipboard Android Q includes a new permission called “READ_CLIPBOARD_IN_BACKGROUND”. As the name suggests, this new permission will prevent random background apps from accessing clipboard content.

10. Downgrade App Updates. Many leaked codes and command lines indicate that Android Q will have the ability to roll back apps to previous versions.

11New Fonts, Icon Shapes, and Hint Colors.

One feature of Android Pie is the ability to change the background theme.
