Summary and Analysis of Major Events in January 2022

Endoscopic Surgery “Triumvirate”

This month, following the registration certificate obtained by Weigao’s MiaoShou endoscopic robot, the minimally invasive surgical robot TUMAI received the NMPA registration certificate. According to the announcement released by Minimally Invasive Robotics (02252.HK) on January 27, this is currently the first and only four-arm endoscopic surgical robot developed by a Chinese company and approved for market.

The endoscopic surgical robot has entered a stage of “triumvirate” with one foreign company and two domestic companies: the endoscopic surgical robots from Da Vinci, Weigao, and Minimally Invasive Robotics can all be sold in China.

Unlike the surgical procedures approved for Weigao’s MiaoShou, which are concentrated in general surgery, the indications for the Minimally Invasive TUMAI endoscopic surgical robot are in urology. According to reports from Intuitive Surgical, urology is the department with the most applications of endoscopic surgical robots, and robotic surgery has significant advantages over traditional methods.

In the United States, the penetration rate of robot-assisted radical prostatectomy has exceeded 70%. Due to less intraoperative bleeding and faster surgical speed, it effectively preserves structures related to urinary control, promotes early recovery of urinary control postoperatively, and maximizes recovery of functional capabilities. Radical prostatectomy has become a classic procedure for robotic surgery.

Neurosurgery Surgical Robots Are More Mature, Core Components Are Domestically Sourced

According to the National Medical Products Administration, this month, Baihui Weikang and Huake Precision both had neurosurgery surgical navigation systems approved.

Reports indicate that Baihui Weikang has achieved domestic production of core components for surgical robots, including optical tracking devices and robotic arms (Si Yu adds: The main modules commonly found in the surgical robot industry, NDI and UR, are all imported, constrained by trade policies and high pricing).
