The NUC is a mini PC system launched by Intel in 2012. Since 2020, it has evolved into NUC laptops, including the M15 and X15 product lines, which are even more niche than the NUC mini hosts. The NUC laptops use the public model from Tongfang International, and some past products have even coincidentally resembled those from the Mechanical Revolution brand.
Now, Intel has launched the new NUC X15 in the domestic market, featuring the combination of the 12th generation Core i7 and the A730M discrete graphics, with the system version priced at only 4999 yuan, which offers good value for money.
This product has a metal ACD body, adopts a black appearance, is about 22mm thick, weighs 2.2kg, and its portability is acceptable. The built-in 62Wh battery capacity is also not too small.
The new NUC X15, while not narrow, still does not come with a numeric keypad, and there is a lot of space on both sides of the C surface. Its touchpad is of a decent size, but unfortunately lacks fingerprint recognition, facial recognition, and other security technologies.
Its screen is a 15.6-inch IPS panel with a 16:9 aspect ratio, featuring a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, 72% NTSC high color gamut, 144Hz refresh rate, and 300nits brightness, which is considered mainstream.
The new NUC X15 is equipped with the Intel 12th generation Core i7-12700H processor, which features 6 large and 8 small cores, 14 cores, and 20 threads, with a maximum turbo frequency of 4.7GHz, which is still competitive today, and can be seen as a downclocked version of the 13th generation Core i7-13700H.
This product also comes standard with Intel’s own A730M discrete graphics, which is a “sub-flagship” of the Iris Xe family, featuring 24 Xe cores and 24 ray tracing units, with a 192-bit memory bandwidth and 12GB of memory. Theoretically, a fully powered A730M can reach the level of the RTX 3060, and it also supports AV1 encoding hardware acceleration, which is beneficial for improving efficiency in video production, transmission, and live streaming scenarios.
However, Intel’s performance at the driver level is average, so in terms of gaming experience, the A730M still cannot compete with the RTX 3060 at the same level, being only slightly better than the RTX 3050 Ti.
The new NUC X15 has 2 DDR5-4800 memory slots, supporting a maximum capacity of 64GB (2 x 32GB). It has 2 M.2 slots, allowing for the installation of 2 2280 standard SSDs, which offers good expandability.
In terms of interfaces, this product offers 3 USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, Thunderbolt 4, HDMI 2.1, RJ45, and audio interfaces. It would be better if it also came with an SD card reader.
Overall, the configuration of the new NUC X15 is above the mainstream level for 2022, with the combination of the 12th generation Core i7-12700H and the A730M discrete graphics. Other brands’ gaming laptops are priced above 6500 yuan, while its system version is only sold for 4999 yuan, and the cost of purchasing 16GB memory and a 1TB SSD is about 1000 yuan, making the total expense of 5999 yuan still sufficient in terms of performance today.
The biggest uncertainty of this product is when the A730M will launch a perfect driver, and when the new products with the 13th generation Core + RTX 4050 platform will start dropping below the 6500 yuan price point.
At this point in time, if you happen to have an idle M.2 SSD and DDR5 laptop memory at home (considering buying second-hand memory to save costs, and it’s best to buy a brand new hard drive), buying this machine can save you a lot of money, making it a suitable time. However, the longer you wait, including the new NUC X15 and other 12th generation Core + RTX 30 discrete gaming laptops, the harder it will be for them.
