On June 12, news emerged that the prices of LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) panels for televisions are currently at a level that allows Chinese panel manufacturers to make slight profits. Market research firm Counterpoint stated that in the past, the prices of LCDs for televisions fluctuated significantly, but have stabilized since mid-2023.

In the past, to increase their market share, Chinese panel manufacturers adopted low-price and aggressive strategies. However, with South Korean panel manufacturers exiting the LCD market for televisions, competition has decreased, leading to reduced price fluctuations. Particularly, Chinese panel manufacturers, who dominate the market, can now adjust the supply of LCDs independently.Samsung Display exited the LCD business in 2022, and LG Display ceased production of LCDs for televisions in its domestic factories by the end of 2022. Samsung Display’s Suzhou LCD factory and LG Display’s Guangzhou LCD factory were both acquired by TCL Huaxing Optoelectronics.Counterpoint noted that in recent years, from the perspective of mainland Chinese panel manufacturers, considering government subsidies, the price range for LCDs for televisions allows them to make slight profits. Taiwanese panel manufacturers may be close to the breakeven point. However, at the current price levels, it is difficult for panel manufacturers to achieve significant profits, but the situation is much better compared to the substantial losses suffered during the oversupply period of the past few years.Institutions: There is Still Profit to be Made in LCD TV Panels!Price trends for LCD TV panels from July 2023 to August 2025In the past two years, the price changes for LCDs per square meter have remained within a narrow range. For sizes such as 49, 50, 55, 65, and 75 inches, the price per square meter ranges from $139 to $167. The price for 85-inch LCDs per square meter is between $177 and $185.The LCD TV panel price index (with 2014=100 as the base) has shown little fluctuation since mid-2023. As of May 2025, this index fluctuated between 41.8 and 45.6. From March to May of this year, it was at 44.7, and it is expected to be 42.4 in August.During the pandemic in 2021, this index sharply dropped from the late 80s to 30 in September 2022. However, compared to the period from 2020 to 2022, the price index for LCD TV panels has shown less volatility in 2023.In the first quarter of this year, influenced by uncertainties in U.S. government tariff policies, increased LCD inventory demand from TV manufacturers preparing for stock, and the expansion of China’s “trade-in” subsidy for TV sales, the prices of LCDs for televisions increased by an average of 2.8% compared to the fourth quarter of last year. The average price of LCDs in the second quarter is expected to be higher than in the first quarter for most screen sizes. In May, the prices of major screen sizes exceeded previous forecasts, similar to April. The LCD sizes that did not see a price drop in May are expected to continue declining from June into the third quarter.Institutions: There is Still Profit to be Made in LCD TV Panels!LCD TV panel price index from January 2015 to August 2025Counterpoint stated that from the summer of 2023 to the present, LCD prices have experienced three mild cycles of rise and fall, and are currently in the middle of the third declining phase.
