Just by looking at the title of this article, many friends will immediately guess which phone it is, as this phone attracted many iPhone users to switch to Huawei back in the day and has since become a significant player in the market. This is the Huawei Mate 20, a blockbuster phone from 2018, known for its classic design and powerful Kirin 980 processor, which was very popular at the time.It was with the Mate 20 that Huawei broke free from the stigma of contract phones and gained market recognition. This 7-year-old phone has since been upgraded to the HarmonyOS 4.0 system, becoming increasingly smooth, and is considered a gem in the industry.
This device was priced at 3999 yuan when it was launched in 2018, but now the average price for a second-hand unit is just over 200 yuan, with many netizens using it as a backup phone. I also got my hands on it to share my actual experience.First, let’s talk about the LCD screen. Many enthusiasts love this screen (LCD fans will never be slaves), featuring a 6.53-inch waterdrop display that shows text quite clearly. Even at maximum brightness (800 nits) under sunlight, the content is still visible, which is more comfortable for those sensitive to low-frequency flickering compared to OLED screens. The resolution is 2244×1080 pixels, with a pixel density of 381 ppi. The screen is a mix of Sharp and BOE, and there seems to be no noticeable difference between the two; LCD fans can buy it with confidence, as this model lives up to its flagship status.
If you are looking to buy this phone, pay special attention to whether the screen is original—if the screen has been replaced, the chin will be wider, and the display quality will naturally be subpar. After upgrading to HarmonyOS 4.0, it is indeed smooth. Although the Kirin 980 chip is old, using WeChat and watching Douyin runs without lag. Playing “Honor of Kings” at medium graphics can maintain 60 frames, though it occasionally drops a few frames during team battles. The 6GB of RAM feels a bit small now; switching between four or five apps in the background can be a bit slow, so it’s recommended to disable unnecessary auto-start apps.
In terms of photography, it features a rear triple camera setup with a 16MP ultra-wide-angle lens (f/2.2 aperture), a 12MP wide-angle lens (f/1.8 aperture), and an 8MP 2X telephoto lens (f/2.4 aperture). During the day, it performs adequately, but struggles at night. The Leica triple camera produces natural colors in good lighting, and the 2X telephoto lens is quite convenient for capturing documents. However, at night, noise increases, and details can become blurred. The rear fingerprint unlock is conveniently placed and recognizes quickly.
Battery life is a common issue with second-hand phones. This unit lasts about four hours on screen, and the 4000mAh capacity has indeed aged. The 22.5W fast charging speed is decent; plugging it in when I wake up can charge it to about half by the time I’m done getting ready. If you encounter particularly poor battery life, you can negotiate the price down a bit and spend a few dozen yuan to replace the battery for another two years of use.
In terms of special features, it supports NFC, infrared, a 3.5mm headphone jack, dual speakers, USB 3.0 interface, and memory expansion. It also supports PC mode, allowing you to use it as a TV box or stream games with a wireless keyboard and mouse when paired with a dock!Regarding pricing, the average transaction price on Xianyu is around 200 yuan. Units with minor scratches on the frame and slightly aged screens can be found for just over 200 yuan, while those in particularly good condition go for around 270-280 yuan. Although units with replaced domestic screens are cheaper (under 200 yuan), the display quality is significantly worse, which I personally think is not worth it. Overall, getting such a backup phone for just over 200 yuan is quite a bargain. If you want a good eye-friendly screen and a stable system, this phone can meet those needs. The craftsmanship and experience of an old flagship are still more solid.
