It is important to clarify that this does not meanMr. Jiu is now drinking alcohol as if it were water, drinking as he pleases. In fact, compared to the previous state where he was tormented by addiction, unable to take his eyes off alcohol and craving it intensely,Mr. Jiu has now completely freed himself from the entanglement of addiction and has no desire for alcohol at all.
What is the “alcoholism chip”?
Dr. Zhang Dapeng, the attending physician of the Substance Dependence Department at the Third People’s Hospital of Fuyang, explained that the “alcoholism chip” is not an electronic device, but rather a micro-invasive surgery that implants a sustained-release form of Naltrexone into the patient’s body. Naltrexone, as an opioid receptor antagonist, can fundamentally block the desire to drink, reduce cravings for alcohol, and suppress the pleasure of drinking, helping patients to quit alcohol from both physical and psychological aspects, making it more effective than traditional methods of quitting alcohol.
This long-acting sustained-release therapy can last for more than 6 months with a single implantation, avoiding missed doses or forgotten medications, and most patients can be treated with just one implantation.
It has minimal trauma, quick recovery, and patients do not need to visit the hospital frequently. The medication is released directly in the body, avoiding gastrointestinal side effects, reducing the metabolic burden on the liver, and the implant can be completely absorbed by the body, eliminating the need for removal, ensuring high safety and minimal side effects.
What are the costs?
It is understood thatthe cost of the surgical medication is around 18,000 yuan.
“However, treatment for alcohol dependence must follow a rigorous clinical pathway,” emphasized Fan Dongli, director of the Substance Dependence Department at the Third People’s Hospital of Fuyang,“not all diagnosed patients are eligible for immediate implantation.”
Treatment must be scientifically advanced in three stages: first, entering the acute withdrawal phase under medical evaluation and monitoring for 7 to 14 days, during which benzodiazepine step therapy is used to control withdrawal reactions, focusing on preventing severe risks such as tremors, delirium, and seizures; once the patient safely passes the acute withdrawal phase, a systematic evaluation lasting 1 to 3 days is conducted, including blood biochemistry, liver and kidney function, and psychological assessments; then, after a multidisciplinary team evaluation confirms eligibility, the Naltrexone sustained-release implantation surgery can be performed.
Regarding post-operative management, experts particularly remind: “The implant releases medication subcutaneously for about 6 months, continuously blocking the alcohol reward pathway, but it must be combined with systematic psychological treatment and family support. Patients must strictly avoid foods containing alcohol and return to the hospital for liver function tests at 1/3/6 months post-surgery.”
