High School English Listening Practice Test (Eighteen)
Text 1 (31 words) Apartment
M: Only one bathroom, and no TV in the living room. Why did you choose this place?
W: Well, look at the bedroom, it’s designed with the newborn baby in mind.
Text 2 (27 words) Weather
W: Look, the sky is almost dark! I think it’ll rain later.
M: Probably. The weather in summer is so changeable. It was still sunny this morning.
Text 3 (35 words) Sports Bar
M: It’s just a bar where people can enjoy drinks and watch sports on television. Why is it getting popular?
W: You mean The Sports Bra? That’s because it only shows women’s sports on television.
Text 4 (36 words) Painting Techniques
W: Mr. Smith, do my paintings reflect country life well?
M: Yes, and I especially like the colors. But your reliance on one technique makes your paintings look too similar. You have to work on that.
Text 5 (35 words) Change of Plans
W: Dean said he ran into you in the museum yesterday afternoon. Shouldn’t you have been in the park next to the library at that time?
M: I changed my mind because of the weather.
Text 6 (91 words) The Joker
W: I had a good time at your family reunion last night. One of your relatives was telling the funniest jokes.
M: Really? Was it my aunt Vicky?
M: Hmm. Maybe it was my cousin Tommy — he was the young guy with glasses.
W: No, no, it was an older man.
M: Oh, then it was probably my uncle Ollie — he was wearing a baseball cap — or my uncle Bert, the one with the big beard.
W: It was that first one.
Text 7 (133 words) Phishing Website
W: Officer, this is Sally Brown. I have an incident to report!
M: OK, calm down. Now tell me what happened.
W: Well, I was browsing on social media two weeks ago. Then I saw an ad for a cute dress from a famous fashion brand. I clicked on the ad and it took me to a website with the address www.fantasticfashion.sale. The price of the dress was 75% cheaper than the price at major department stores.
W: Yes. But I never received it. And I even looked for a contact page but couldn’t find one. Is the site a scam website?
M: Well, I think it is. You should be more alert.
W: I know. I shouldn’t have given in to the temptation of low prices.
Text 8 (191 words) Night School Life for Young People
M: I’m so glad that a variety of classes have been offered in the Night School for Youths. What kind of class did you sign up for?
W: Well, I’ve tried frothing milk myself, but I’ve never attempted latte art before. Our instructor can craft intricate designs like lions, pandas, and monkeys. It’s truly an art. I’ll make some latte art coffee for you, Mom, and Dad to enjoy this Saturday.
M: Thanks. I plan to join the calligraphy class, but I’m just a beginner.
W: Don’t worry. At first, I thought it’d be tiring to go to these classes after a 10-hour workday. But now I know I’m wrong. There’s no pressure in these classes. We’re not forced to study here or have any requirements to fulfill; the whole environment is lighthearted. Coming to the Night School for Youths has also brought me closer to my co-workers.
M: Great. Oh, I bought you something during my business trip.
M: I wanted to, but I didn’t have much money since I’ve just started working. It’s a bag with a panda pattern on it.
W: I love pandas. Thanks!
Text 9 (168 words) Cat Retirement Village
M: Oh, a cat. Did your friend ask you to take care of it for a while?
W: No. Well, when I was on my way to the hospital last week, I heard some noise. It turned out to be a wounded cat. It just lay under the bench by the street, so I took it home.
W: Yeah. The problem is no one is willing to adopt this senior cat. What should I do?
M: Why not send it to the retirement village? The retirement village features six small luxury wooden houses. Each one can house four cats with room to spare. There is also a community room for when the cats want to mix with their companions.
W: Sounds great. Is it full now?
M: No. I just went there yesterday.
M: Well, I just received a call from my sister who’s working there now. She wants me to drive her home. So you can go with me.
Text 10 (189 words) Hangzhou’s Zero Waste Store
W: Qiu Li, an ecology teacher from Zhejiang University, opens a quaint, independent grocery store in Hangzhou. At the store, the beans are stored in large transparent jars. Vegetables are placed in bamboo baskets free from plastic packaging, and seasonings are kept in half-meter-tall jars. Years of engagement in environmental protection has taught Qiu that “while everyone knows the importance of environmental protection, ingraining the concept of sustainability into their daily behaviors remains a significant challenge”. Qiu said that even though most supermarkets and shopping malls have implemented a ban on providing free plastic bags, the low cost and easy availability of them have prevented the ban from having a greater impact on a larger number of people. With the growing presence of the store and its monthly environmental events, an increasing number of residents in the district began adopting a more sustainable approach to their shopping. Qiu added that about four-fifths of sales of the store come from in-person channels, highlighting a more robust promotion of environmental consciousness in offline activities. This is the reason why she has maintained her brick-and-mortar operations despite the significantly higher costs involved.
Question 19 is an emotional attitude question. Qiu said, “… even though …, the low cost and easy availability of them have prevented the ban from having a greater impact on a larger number of people.” This implies that the ban on plastic bags has limited effectiveness, hence the answer is B.
