Double Achievements! Witnessing the Power of ‘Team’ at Southeast University!

The 41st ICCAD (International Conference on Computer Aided Design) was grandly held from October 30 to November 4 in San Diego, California, USA. This conference, co-sponsored by ACM and IEEE, is an annual event that explores new challenges, proposes cutting-edge innovative solutions, and identifies emerging technologies in the field of Electronic Design Automation (EDA).

Defining Design Goals and Optimizing 3D Layouts

The SEU Placer Team from the National ASIC Engineering Center of Southeast University (team members: Mei Yangjie, Shen Fuheng, Shi Yuejian, Liu Hong, Zhu Ziran, and Yang Jun) participated in the CAD Contest@ICCAD competition organized by Synopsys, one of the top three EDA companies in integrated circuit design. The competition topic was “3D Placement with D2D Vertical Connections,” which addresses the 3D layout issues in chiplets that are gaining attention in the post-Moore era. The competition encouraged teams to explore innovative solutions for netlist partitioning and dual-die 3D layout to achieve optimal performance for stacked 3D dual-die systems. The algorithm process designed by the SEU Placer team aimed to minimize the total wire length, achieving excellent 3D layout results through partitioning and layout optimization for the given netlist, ultimately securing second place.

The CAD competition organized by ICCAD is the most influential international academic competition in the field of integrated circuit chip design and computer-aided tool research. This year, it attracted 166 teams from eight countries and regions, including mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the USA, South Korea, Germany, India, and Switzerland.

Facing New Challenges and Achieving Great Results

This year, in the newly established TinyML (Tiny Machine Learning) track, after fierce competition, the SEUer Team from the School of Electronic Science and Engineering and the School of Microelectronics at Southeast University (team members: Zhang Jingwei, Shen Zhaoyao, Cao Xinye, Zhang Yu, Ji Yuning, He Jingxuan, Zhong Zhipeng, Zhou Zihan, Xu Guofang, Li Guoqing, and Professor Zhang Meng) once again fought bravely in the TinyML track under the name of “Southeast University” after winning the championship in the System Design Contest (SDC) at the internationally renowned Design Automation Conference (DAC) in early July this year. They deeply optimized and collaboratively designed TinyML algorithms deployed on low-power processors, achieving excellent comprehensive metrics in accuracy, recall rate, inference delay, and memory usage, ultimately winning second place.

This year, the newly established TinyML (Tiny Machine Learning) track at ICCAD requires participating teams to design and implement an effective, open-source TinyML algorithm that can be deployed and run on a given low-power microprocessor platform, aimed at applications in life sciences—automatically distinguishing life-threatening ventricular tachycardia conditions and providing optimal data information. This competition attracted more than 150 top research teams in artificial intelligence algorithms and circuit architecture from around the world, including MIT, Stanford University, Georgia Tech, and many domestic and foreign universities and research institutions.

ICCAD

It is reported that ICCAD is one of the four top conferences in the fields of EDA and circuit and system design. Each year, it holds multiple competitions addressing urgent problems faced in integrated circuit and system design, with topics directly proposed by leading international integrated circuit design companies, aiming to provide better or optimal solutions to the most challenging problems encountered in the industry. The evaluation process is extremely rigorous, requiring three rounds of preliminary rankings and competitions, with only the top three teams each year receiving substantial monetary awards. The results of the competition can often be directly translated into industrial solutions, significantly promoting the development of integrated circuits and their systems.

Broad vision leads to profound insights,

Southeast University people always maintain a vigorous posture

and forge ahead on the path to excellence!

As the dust settles,

we ride forward with renewed vigor

Tomorrow, every SEUer will continue to strive towards the future!
