【Disassembly】+ Have Any Engineers Used a Pointer Multimeter? Today I Will Disassemble an MF500 External Magnetic Multimeter

We are the younger generation and have never used a pointer multimeter, so I have always been thinking about it. Later, I bought one and decided never to use a pointer multimeter again.
I wonder if you usually use digital multimeters or pointer multimeters.
▽ The new one was initially loved and later casually discarded.

▽ Although I don’t like using it, this multimeter has made a significant mark in history.
I think without this multimeter, there wouldn’t be the more advanced multimeters we have today. Many older engineers must have a special fondness for it.

▽ This is the dial, supporting current, voltage, and resistance.

▽ Below are two function knobs and four banana plug sockets, which can test voltage, current, resistance, and audio dB.

▽ Let’s try to set it to the top.
▽ Open the battery compartment; on the left is a 9v square battery, and on the right is a 1.5v AA battery.
▽ The back case has 4 screws; now let’s take off the back case.
▽ There is actually a circuit board; this meter must be a new one made from an old model.
▽ The original vintage meters did not have circuit boards; they were all like this.
▽ Look at the circuit board; most components are passive components like resistors, capacitors, and diodes.
▽ This is the function knob and the corresponding PCB contacts; the knob has two springs for function selection.
The circuit board process should choose hard gold treatment like gold fingers, which is more wear-resistant and durable.
▽ This is the other side of the board, which has no components.
▽ So how does this meter work? Here is a schematic diagram for reference.
When measuring voltage and current, the multimeter does not need battery power; you can remove the battery and still measure.
When measuring x1, x10, x100, and x1k resistance, only 9v power supply is needed; for measuring x10k resistance, both 9v and 1.5v power supply are required.
▽ Finally, let’s look at the size comparison between this meter and a digital meter; it is about twice the width of a regular multimeter.
▽ Finally, let’s look at the size comparison between this meter and a digital meter; it is about twice the thickness of a regular multimeter.
So, are you considering getting a pointer multimeter as a headrest? From now on, no pressure on projects, and no smoke from the boards.
