Every day that does not dance is a betrayal of life. New students entering Xidian University are full of expectations as they welcome their first competition – the Spark Cup. This is not only the first opportunity for Xidian students to showcase themselves but also the beginning of a long competition journey.
We invited the author of the special prize in category C, “Intelligent Mirror Based on Raspberry Pi”, Long Junyu, who will share with us the journey from the start to the end of the project.
Project Journey
When asked how he came up with the idea for this project, Long Junyu smiled and mentioned that he often found it inconvenient to check the time on his phone while grooming, which led to him being late. He thought that if he could display all the information he wanted on the mirror, he could see the time and class schedule while grooming, thus avoiding being late.
The spark of inspiration often comes in an instant. Not wanting to be late anymore, the idea of the intelligent mirror was born in Long Junyu’s mind.
Next, Long Junyu considered the ways to implement the intelligent mirror. On one hand, there was the choice of mirror. The material of the mirror would not only affect the cost of subsequent materials but also considering that the ultimate goal of the mirror is to allow information to be seen from the back while the user can see themselves from the front, the choice of mirror was particularly important.
On the other hand, regarding the choice of programming language, Long Junyu deliberated between Raspberry Pi and microcontrollers, ultimately choosing Raspberry Pi. The preliminary preparations lay the foundation for a project, and from his thorough considerations, it is evident that Long Junyu has a comprehensive understanding of his project.
Blossoming Results
Having an idea means putting in the effort to turn that idea into reality. In this project, the most important part is programming. Since Long Junyu is a freshman and not particularly skilled in programming, he had to learn programming while working on the project. Therefore, he searched for tutorial videos on Bilibili and looked up papers on CNKI, Wikipedia, and others.
When talking about the difficulties encountered in the project, Long Junyu felt that the biggest challenge was programming. Firstly, he was not proficient in programming; secondly, sometimes he wanted to implement a function, but the technology did not allow it, and he couldn’t find the information online. Later, he discovered that Python could not achieve a good interface, so he began learning the next programming language, HTML. In just one month, he mastered the relevant skills from Baidu, Google, and Wikipedia.
Completing a project alone means that all difficulties must be solved alone. Sometimes Long Junyu would think how nice it would be if someone could help, but he never considered giving up. In the end, he slowly turned his thoughts into reality by himself.
Looking back on the project, he smiled and said that working alone can be more efficient, although having more people might save some effort but could also lead to other issues.
Reflecting on Spark
Initially participating in the Spark Cup, Long Junyu, like most students, regarded it as an entry-level competition, hoping to gain some opportunities to improve himself. However, during the process of participating in the Spark Cup and working on the project, he met some outstanding teachers and seniors and gained a lot.
Winning an award in the Spark Cup was a valuable experience for Long Junyu, not just about receiving a certificate; it broadened his horizons and provided him with some opportunities, revealing different possibilities for the future.
Message
At the same time, Long Junyu has some advice for students who also want to create good projects but lack a solid technical foundation. First, do not be afraid because of your poor foundation; if you have an idea, you should strive to realize it. Completing a project is a very arduous process, and if you can overcome this process, regardless of the final outcome, your abilities will surely improve significantly and you will gain a lot.
In the current internet age, resources are always endless; it depends on whether you want to absorb them and turn knowledge into your own. Many people stagnate because of their poor foundation, but often the hardest part is to truly prepare to take the first step. Clearly, Long Junyu has taken the first step and improved himself.
“People are not defined by what they are born with, but by what they learn and gain.” At the end of the interview, Long Junyu shared this quote with everyone. During the four years of university, the knowledge and skills that can be learned are countless, and it is hoped that this knowledge will cultivate one excellent Xidian student after another.
