On the afternoon of August 6, the “Let Dreams Take Flight” DIY drone design event organized by the Women’s Federation of the Shenxiang community concluded amidst laughter and joy. Eleven children from the neighborhood transformed into “little engineers,” using their nimble hands and imaginative ideas to create their own drones, allowing their scientific dreams to take flight in the collision of technology and childlike fun.
Happy Time
At the beginning of the event, a professional teacher provided the children with an engaging lesson on drone knowledge, explaining what drones are and their origins, which captivated the children; they also introduced the types of drones, including multi-rotor, vertical take-off and landing, and helicopters, along with their respective characteristics and uses, allowing the children to understand the performance differences among various drones. During the interactive session, the teacher pointed to various flight images on the presentation screen: “Can anyone tell me which of these images are drones?” The children eagerly raised their hands: “This one is, it doesn’t have a cockpit!” The teacher then asked, “What should we pay attention to when operating a drone?” The children responded enthusiastically, “We can’t fly it in crowded places” and “We can’t fly it when the battery is low”… The atmosphere at the event was lively, and the children deepened their understanding and mastery of knowledge through fun Q&A.
When it came to the assembly phase, the children immediately dove into “battle.” The kids carefully disassembled the parts, installing the aircraft’s body, wings, and other components, not even bothering to wipe the sweat from their brows. The first child to finish assembling took their drone for a test flight; some drones traced beautiful arcs in the air, while others wobbled playfully from side to side. Even when they occasionally “crashed,” the children rushed over to check and adjust, their faces filled with determination not to give up.
This event not only allowed the children to engage with aerospace technology knowledge but also cultivated their logical thinking and teamwork skills through hands-on experience. Seeing the children cheer for their creations, one could feel their love for science beginning to blossom. This “learning through play” approach is far more engaging than textbooks.
Although the event has concluded, the technological dreams in the children’s hearts have quietly taken flight. The Women’s Federation of the Shenxiang community will continue to build a platform for women and children in the neighborhood to realize their dreams, helping them pursue their ideals and shine brightly.
